292 major problem

Ok guys i need major help with my major problem
i have a 292 and lost compression on one whole side(the first cyl side), meaning im running only 4 cyl at this momment.. What is the best way to fix this? buy a new block? rebuild? also which ever way is best i need to be cheapest as i am only a 17 year old trying to get this problem fixed. I have a few older friends that have rebuild motors before and said it wouldnt be that bad just to do it and then take it and have the heads cleaned and bored and all... So with this info do you think you could tell me why i am having this problem? and what is the best way to fix this and the cheapest?

Also anyone willing to sell a decent or rebuilt block for a pretty good price?

Thanks a bunch guys this site is amazing and ive used it many of times for resources.

Where are you located? Also, did you pull thevalve cover and see if the push rods are all in their correct place?

im located in dallas tx, i took it to a shop and they said it had some blue smoke, but this occured after i changed the timing chain which i ran into problems doing, so i think i messed something up in the vavle train... but no i didnt look, and when i did have them off when setting the time they seemed fine...

Blue smoke sounds like valve guides or valve guide seals are worn. Not a big problem, just an eye sore and maybe some spotting on the bumper.

Timing chain installation on the Y is very different than many folks are used to. Gears need to be orientied so that when you are looking at them from radiator end the index dots are at 3 o'clock and there should be 12 chain links between those 2 index dots.

Forgot to mention, there are several folks in DFW area with a lot of Y experience and about an hour down 35 is a real resource. You need to also check the site below.

Good luck.
