I want to put ac in my 1963 Econoline with a 170 engine. Will an ac bracket and compressor from some other Ford 6 cylinder mount to the 170 engine and line up with the bottom pully.

All the mounts and compressors I found use the old York compressor, and no, they won't fit. It is because the compressor is too big to fit under the dog house. I used the mount and modified it for a late model small compressor. Next problem is finding a condenser small enough to fit in front of the small radiator. Next problem is it over heated. I mounted a 2nd radiator. For the pulleys, I had a problem there also and can't remember how I did that. How ever I got it all done and it works good. You have your work cut out but it can be done.

Where will you find a 144/170 engine with A/C from a 1960/64 Falcon, a 170 engine with A/C from a 1962/63 Fairlane, or even a 170 engine with A/C from a 1965 Mustang (before 8/23/64)? All these cars with the 170 engine offered optional A/C, but are nearly impossible to find today.

insulate the motor box real well, as well as above the headiner and nose and interior overall using fiberglass sheeting(sometimes @ used building supplies places you can find used drop ceiling type panels cheap... peel off the white finish and they are a nice size to work with) after insulating you would be surprised how much more cooler & comfortable the interior will be after all between the nose vents, vent windows and if its a van hopefully u got opening rear window option..thats a lotta airflow
don't hurt to put a layer of sound deadining insulation in the floor either

Thanks for the info. I will add more insulation and give that a try. I was talking to a fellow the other daY THAT MADE HIS LIVING INSTALLING AC AND HEAT ON HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND OTHER VEHICLES AND HE SAID HE COULD PUT AC ON THE TRUCK AND WOULD HELP ME THIS SPRING. I KNOW HE IS VERY CAPABLE. He is a dealer for Red Dot. I guess I will have to wait till spring to find out if its possible.

iffin he's installing a/c on heavy equipment he may just havva solution for ya, cuz i've seen somma the tight quarters that engines are crammed into in that kinda stuff.

I think adding an electric fan will take care of the cooling along with the stock fan. Time will tell on the rest.

 

I kinda wondered if a swap was possible out of, say, an '81 Fairmont would its inline 6 fit along with radiator, a/c brackets etc....

 

I will find out in the spring. Its almost 0 here and I have to work outside.

 

The passenger side of doghouse will have to modified to accept the A/C compressor and then you will need a spacer to raise the passenger seat about 1"-2" to fit over the new lump in the doghouse.

Evaporative coils can be mounted on the roof. I have 2 vans that have had this done. For the A/C, use the underdash unit from a mid-60s Ford. One of my vans is a maxi-van and it has dual air, one under the dash and one behind the back seat.

These vans will never run cool, but make sure that you have a good belly pan, which scoops up the air and forces it through the radiator. You have no hope of keeping these vans cool in any sort of warm weather without the belly pan.
