i'm lookin into buyin a 96 7.3 Turbo diesel powerstroke...i love the look of stakcs but idk if i wanna run em straight pipe or with muffflers...im goin from 3" to bewteen 4" and 6"... i heard straight pipe takes a lot of low end on a gasser..does it do the same on a diesel?? im not worried about how loud it will be...just give some hints on what you guys do..thanks
I don't run stacks yet,but I will soon! The more free the exhaust on a diesel the better. You want to let her breath asd much as possible. The exhaust will not be too loud(in my opinion) because the turbo quiets it down pretty good. Hope this helps you.
I have 4" stacks on my 96 powerstroke and i havent notice any loss in power what soever. My truck is also for sale right now. check out the pictures in the classifieds on this fourm.
I have stack (not on truck right now, stupid topper!!) but you want to get up to atleast 4 inch as soon as you can. some down pipes go from 3 to 4. My down pipe is 3 inch then right where the rest of the exhaust hooks up I jumped it to 5 inch. When I reinstall my stacks they will be replumbed in 5 inch thru the bed then still a 5 inch T pipe then to 6 inch stacks. Adding a muffler is always an option. I think my stacks were quiter than the side pipe I have now. outside as a bystandard the stack are definatly quieter than the side pipe on the passenger side. Also they make in stack mufflers that are nice.
As for flow open it up as far as you can. Like Talyn said the turbo is as much Back pressure as you need.
ive got 4" straight cuts with raincap and im running them straight pipe. even with them being right behind my head they arent terribly loud. if im really laying into the throttle, they get a little annoying after a while, but hearing the turbo spool up alleviates that. you wont be disappointed with them.
i went from stock exhaust to pretty much the setup i got now, full 4" dp to 6" pipe and 6" stacks. there was a slight drop in the low end response by opening it up, but egt's dropped a bunch which is better to have.
well.......
