Cold starts
Had ice on windshield this morning and it was somehwere in the low 30s. This is my first experience with cold starts with a diesel. The "wait to start" light stayed on about 4-5 seconds and then it started, just a little harder than normal, had some white smoke for a couple of minutes maybe and then normal. Should I go ahead and plug it in when it gets below 30.

No just keep the glow plugs warming longer than the WTS light. The glow plugs in that case could stay on 2 minutes. Don't pay attention to the WTS light its worthless for the most part. Let the GP's warm for 30 seconds or so and it will fire up nicely as long as your system is all working.
if longer doesn't help then try 1 minute. but you really shouldn't need to plug it in in the 30's.
