Oil Changes For The 6.4

Mac_Daddy,
Use any API CJ-4 oil in appropriate weight for your application. The Ford manual just states to use CJ-4 Motorcraft oil or equivalent CJ-4 oil. FMC would like you to buy there personal label oil so they can make money selling you oil.
Rotella, Delo, Delvac and others all make an excellent API CJ-4 oil that will work just fine in your 6.4.

BTW Amsoil, Royal Purple and Redline do Not currently have any oils that are API CJ-4 Certified.
Here is a list of the current API Certified CJ-4 oils available.

If you want a Full-synthetic API CJ-4 Certified oil the only two currently avaliable are Mobil "Delvac 1 ESP" (5W-40) and "Duron E Synthetic" (10W-40)

I used it in all my diesels, haven't changed the 6.4 yet, probably will use it when I do.

In fact Amsoil only has five oils period that are API Certified (4-gasoline engines & 1-diesel engine) caveat emptor.

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 Synthetic Oil:
As you are aware the recommended oil viscosities are very different in the 6.4 L PSD compared to the 6.0L and 7.3L PSD. With winter coming. the best oil in the 6.4 L PSD from the owners manual is 5W-40. It covers temperatures from -23C/-32F to +38C/100F. There is no oil presently on the market that is 5W-40 CJ-4 except Mobil Delvac 1 ESP Synthetic. My Ford dealership has this oil in stock so I can now purchase it. It is expensive when you need 14 1/2 quarts for an oil change, but I am considering using it.
I have 23000 Kms /14000miles on the 6.4 L PSD. I have used convential Motorcraft 15W-40 CJ-4 since new. My questions to anyone are:
1. Do I have to flush the motor to put in the synthetic oil?
2. The recommended oil change for trailer towing is 8000Kms /5000miles. Do I have to change Molbil Delvac 1 on the same schedule or increase the interval ?
3. Is there any appreciable increase in fuel mileage?
4. Is cold weather starting easier with sythentic oil?
5. Is the benifits of Mobil Delvac 1 worth the $8.00 per quart cost compare to Motor craft at $3.50 per quart?

pilotshot,
1) No flush neccessary, just drain and refill with the oil of your choice, synthetic or dino.
2) Only way to extend OCI with any oil is to perform UOA and that will determine if the oil can be run longer.
3) Might see a very minor increase do to the thinner oil weight 5W.
4) Yes generally, as the pour point is lower.
5) That is up to you, if you cannot run extended OCI and you don't live in an extremely cold climate, ie Buffalo NY or Alaska dino oil will probably be fine.
You can also find a wealth of oil info at the BITOG website & bulletin board
