Engine Oil???

Well in another 1k miles or so I am going to have to do my first oil change( i like to plan ahead). Now From what I can tell a lot of people here recommend the rotella T6 and run a 5w40. Now I was looking into it and I can get 3 gallons of the T6 at 21.35 each or about $65. I can also get Rotella T triple for $12.97 a gallon (15W40) or $64 for a 5 gallon. I am just curious what everyone here thinks. I plan on doing some research in the mean time. Keep in mind I live in FLORIDA..... 50 degrees or less and we start talking about the winter of 1983.... the last time it was that cold.... anyways I am exaggerating a little but this truck will mostly run florida except for visits to NC (family near durham) and summer vacations. Anyways I don't really need the cold protections.

I know oil choice is sorta like ford verse chevy.... or maybe even like choice of NFL teams (Dolfins.... Duh!!!) and prior to this vehicle I have allways run CASTROL GTX (when they got broke in I switched to castrol GTX high mileage) in all my vehicle but they were all gassers. I would love to continue to use Castrol but I also can't ignore the fact that Diesel is different than gas

Use what makes you comfy. I'm in s. ca. and it's usually warm here. Sometimes 100+ for weeks. I use the 5W40 because it gives good high temp. protection too and I believe it has a better chance of not coking in the extremely hot areas of the engine. Esp. the turbo. Many people use the 15W40 and have no problems. Once again, your truck and your pocketbook. Good luck. Don't forget to use OEM filters only.

You'll actually need 4 gallon jugs.

Personally I like the 5w40 because of the injector protection it affords, but I ran 15w40 motorcraft for years with no problems so I think you'd be fine with the 15w40, especially in your temps.

You can't usually beat the price of the T-6 at Walmart unless you find a good sale. As Tim said 15 qts. or 4 gal. with a qt. left over.

The prices I quoted was the walmart prices. I saw a 6 1 gallon at sams just now as well. It was $73.88. The catch is it is not the T6 it is the Rotella T. Or Rotella Triple.

Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil, 1 Gal: Automotive : Walmart.com

Shell Rotella T 15W40 Motor Oil, 1 Gal: Automotive : Walmart.com

I am just not sure the differences. Other than T6 is synthetic.

Whichever oil you decide on, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it as long as it's rated CJ-4.

FYI, the Castrol diesel oil selection is very good, my fuel supplier is also a Castrol distributer and they run it in all of their trucks (15).

I have seen the UOA's as they were trying to get me to switch over to it. If you have a local supply I would give it a try and let us know how it works out for you.
