Oil flooding problem on 390
Put in rebuilt engine with 27K mile on it. I ran it before I bought it and it ran great with no smoking. When I put it in my F350 it smokes (Blue) at idle and take off.
I took off the valve cover(Passenger side) and started the engine. The oil pumps out like a faucet by #3 and #4 cylinder. A little comes out of the pushrods but a gusher from somewhere in the back and piles up and flow over the side of the lip on the head on to the ground.(Fast)It pours. I pulled the plugs and they are oil fouled on #3 and #4. I had the head totally rebuilt with new everything, seals and all before it was put on. I think the oil is flooding out the back cylinders and causing the smoking. But how?? Any suggestions? Should I restrict that oil hole under the rocker arm bolt? I am not sure what the oil flow pattern is for these engines and how it is suppose to be distributed. I know from experience that this is to much oil comong through. Any suggestions from anybody is greatly appreciated on how to fix this problem.

Hi Andy, sorry to hear you are having more problems with that engine. The problem might be the oil feed hole in the head under the rocker stand bolt. It’s the second stand from the rear on the passenger side. Sometimes they can crack, try looking in that area very closely. If it is cracked, it can be repaired very easily by pressing a hollow tube into the passage. Your head shop should be familiar with this procedure if they do a lot of FE’s. Let us know what you find.

P.S. Here's a picture of the passage, second rocker stand boss from the top.

Oil flooding problem on 390
Barry, I looked at the oil feed oil and I can't see anything that looks like a crack. Is it possible that this engine had a high volume oil pump installed and it is pushing to much oil through the hole?? Just guessing. When the oil was coming out it looks like it is coming from the back two cylinders some place. I couldn't really see because the oil was coming out so quick and blocking any kind of view.

A high volume pump by itself will push a lot of oil to the rockers. Seems like you would have the same problem on the other head though. Try this: disable the ignition and have someone crank the engine over while you are looking in the “flood zone.” Maybe the reduced flow will help pinpoint it.

Barry, just wanted to update you. I discovered when I was putting the rocker arm back on that the back bolt was missing a washer. I put a new one on and installed the rocker arm and fired it up. No gushing of oil. I must of missed that washer some how and it was not letting the rocker arm assembly sit flush on the head and causing a gap for oil to come out. The truck is not smoking at all and is running great. Thanks for your help.
