how much oil does my 97 460 hold

...been sitting here thinking about it today. i bought 5 quarts for it and was going to change it myself for. ended up taking it to **ffy *ube. it's a long story why and i know i shouldn't, but thats not what this is about.

does it hold 5 or 6 quarts? i've seen both listed in different places. pretty sure my manual says 5, but i want to say i've also seen 6 listed. anyway, that place charged me for an extra quart (6 total) and the dipstick reads a little high i think.

seems to run fine, should i drain some out if it only holds 5? (fyi - this was a week or two ago)

well looking at All Data it says 5 quarts for the motor and add one if you are changin the filter. if your still kinda skeptical, fill it with 5, then run the motor for about a minute and shut it off and check the dip stick, add a little bit of oik until you get it to where you want it on the stick.

I thought it was a good rule of thumb that you should change the filter when you change the oil i change mine every 3 thousand....

Mine holds 6 with a oil filter twice the size(fl-299) of the stock one and with the stock filter 6 quarts was to much....

yea, didn't realize they needed to specify "with filter change" either. weird. mean green, any reason you use the larger filter other than "feels good"?

think the little extra is anything to worry about or will it be fine for another 2500 miles?

In my truck the motor works a little harder than most, so i want to hold all the extra oil i can,and keep it cool as i can plus i run royal purple, rather then that no reason... If its past the full mark i would drain some out to be safe and keep the extra pressure off your seals if you have no oil leaks, if you have some oil leaks i wouldnt worry about it.... But i know if i put 6 in my truck with the stock filter it was half a quart to much, and with the big filter i can run 6......

i have a 97 f250 with a 460 and mine takes 7 quarts of oil and i always change my oil filter with a k&n a little more expensive but i got it for free one time when i bought an air filter and they work better than any other oil filter ive used and i change my oil every 5000-5500 miles and its still pretty clean.and i toy a lot of trailers to the desert and dunes loaded with sand rails and dirt bikes.

hey i got a question my lil sis truck is having a problem it is a 98 f150 and i think it is a 3 something i forgot, but anyways it says it takes six, so i put six in and ran the vechicle for the filter to fill which the filter is really tiny so it shouldnt took maybe a half a quart, well next thing i know there is no oil read on the dip stick, so i poor in another quart no read, and than i poor in the 8th one and i get a read but only half way up, i was amazed how much oil it took, is that normal
