Need advice on a cut finger
Im pretty sure i got a handle on this but im bored so i thought id ask you guys....
If any of you had a decent cut on your finger then you know that it bleeds a lot. Early this morning i cut my finger in the dumbest way. I woke up at the usuall 6am. I have these fluorescent lights that hang pretty low in my room. I pulled my shirt off, and as i did this i wacked the guard thing that the lights plug into. I sliced the ring finger of my left hand about 1/4" in from in front of the knukcle to the back of the knuckle. It bled everywhere within 1 second. I figured it would be best to stop the bleeding then worry about infection.
So now ive got all this gauze on my finger thats preventing me from using it. I would like to put some peroxide on it and a small band-aid so i can actually use it. Problem is i think it could reopen if i take this gauze off and bleed again. I want this gauze off as soon as possible, should i wait a bit though? What do you guys think?

Eventually you will have to remove the gauze or it will definitely get infected. I would go ahead and take it off and clean it out with some peroxide. Then slap some triple anti-biotic on it and a band-aid. The problem with a cut on your knuckle is that it will be moving all of the time and hard to heal. Putting gauze on it and taping it to where you cant move it for a while, that would be the best way to make it heal.

Since this only happened 1.5 hours ago, I would reopen the wound, make it bleed, wash out with water until the blood stopped flowing, pour alcohol into the cut, and squish anti-septic cream into the cut with a q-tip. Then squish shut and band-aid.
Already too late for super glue probably and not something to do unless your tetanus shot is up to date (booster within last ten years?).

Of course with the amount of alcohol in my bloodstream, it probably kills off any infection...

Make sure it's washed out really well with soap and water. You can use some peroxide on it after you get it washed out. If the cut is open enough, you can get some tape strips (called steri strips 1/4" or 1/2") at any local drug store to keep the cut closed up. The adhesive is better than tape and they are sterile. Or just put some guaze over it and leave it open. A clean open wound is better than a dirty closed wound. If you put an triple antibiotic ointment on it, make sure you wash it with soap and water at least 8 or 12 hours after you put the ointment on. After so long the antibiotic ointment loses it's "antibiotic" and then is just a harbor for bacteria. Watch it for increased redness, tenderness, and if the cut starts to drain "puss". Or if you start running a fever. This could me you have an infection. If the cut is deep enough, you may want to see a doctor and have it really cleaned and stitched, but you would have to do that pretty quick.

Only thing I can say is I used to ignore cuts and scrapes until one got infected last year. Just a simple, run-of-the mill scraped knuckle. Wiped it off an kept working.
At the doctors 2 days later unable to move my entire hand. Red streaks running up my arm. H.D. antibiotics (man, I hate what they do to my guts!). A trip a day later to an orthopedic specialist to make sure the infection hadn't gotten into the joint. They did a CT scan to check and, luckily, it hadn't or I would have been hospitalized and put on I.V. antibiotics.
There are some very nasty germs out there these days that are anti biotic resistant.
I was lucky. From now on, I wash with soap and water, apply antibiotic ointment and keep a very close eye on anything that bleeds.
