How much nitrous on a 428?
I am considering the concealed nitrous system (you know the one that mounts in your air filter). My 428 is a recent rebuild, but I don't know if anything inside is forged, and I highly doubt it. I was thinking about a 100 shot. I wouldn't be spraying very much if at all, but I do not want to have to worry about blowing up the engine. What do you guys think is a prudent amount on a non-forged 428? Also, any experience with this nitrous system?

I have run a two stage kit on a 428 for a number of years with NO problems...a 150 shot to launch it then turn on the 250 shot stage on top of the 150..as long as the engine is set up for it and tuned correctly it will live..but if your engine is stock I would stay at 100 shot or below.

When I run my nitrous setup I am going to use a separate fuel cell with its own pump for the nitrous. I will fill the fuel cell with 110 octane race fuel. I will also have a nitrous shutoff safety switch to save the engine in case of loss of fuel supply. A 200HP shot done correctly is far more safe than a badly setup 100HP shot. First runs will also be on a dyno to ensure proper air/nitrous/fuel mixture.

How much nitrous on a 428?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 04:19 PM (EST)]Cool, thanks for the advice keep it coming. It wouldn't be something I'd use all the time, just if I'm racing somebody and losing, I could spray 'em and win. That's all. So I know next to nothing about about nitrous, what constitutes "set up right"? I am planning on running ported & polished heads, 1.76 roller rockers, cobra jet intake manifold, 750 holley and 4.11s/posi in back with most likely drag radials. For the cam I will run a compcams 270h if I don't change the torque converter, or maybe a 292 if I do change the TC. Is this setup nitrous-friendly, or should I forget about nos? What compromises would I have to make if I wanted to run nos?
PS hey rat you got a new converter huh? what happened to your old one? How do you like the new one?

I am going with a NOS 250 cheater system. I went with forged pistons and a big exhaust lobe just for the nitrous. I am also only running about 9.5:1 compression to make it a little more nitrous friendly. It will be on the dyno in a couple of weeks. I will post the results when I get them. In the mean time, here are some sites that helped me with my nitrous education.

Just go to Yahoo and do a search on "nitrous tuning", and you will get all kinds of results.

Humm... That sounds familiar! Must be deja-vu.
It's hard to stay of the button! Trust me! You'll love the boost.
Depending on mileage, I don't think a 100 shot will hurt your engine. I would feel a little more comfortable with less compression, if it were my engine. Are you sure it's 10.5? You would have a hard time running pump gas. I know you can get a way with a little more compression with aluminum heads and the right cam. Check on the specifics and then ask your NOS supplier what he thinks.

Well, the only reason I say 10.5:1 is because that's what somebody on this forum told me. I am running 92 octane right now in it with no problems. As for less compression, I think I'd rather just build the engine I really want and forget about nitrous. I can see what you mean about wanting to spray all the time, I'll bet it would be a wild ride. thanks everyone who responded

Bottem line, if you run a 100 pony cheater system on your 428 you won't have any problems with occasional use unless the motor is already tired or running lean (like rat said, err toward rich with the juice). With higher doses of the laughing gas; turn your eye towards your compression and forged pistons...but for your described use don't sweat it and have fun!
