460?

Is it a realistic goal for a 460 to put out 600Hp. Im thinking of getting a 460 for my 70 f100. I was thinking of getting it stroked with one of the kits i have seen floating around and thought i would ask you guys what would you do for the most power and still run on pump gas. Thanks in advance Bobby

600hp for a stoked 460 (514 or larger) is a pretty reasonable and obtainable hp goal even on pump gas (93 octane of course).

you want to keep the compression ratio to max 9.5 with iron heads and 10:1 with aluminum with the right cam choice.

if you are going that route, stroking it and looking for 600hp, invest money in a good set of aftermarket heads. that is where all the power is and most aftermarket heads (of course stay away from the chinese junk, bad copies of factory heads) correct a lot of the factory design flaws (very restrictive exhaust ports, not very optimal chamber design, restrictive intake ports) and for the same or less money then you will put into the factory heads to get them to support 600hp.

the 514 kit used to be all the rage, but now it seems if everyone is buiding 557" motors now as the aftermarket has come along way in supporting the 460 motor family.

check out 460ford.com for numerous articles and builds on engines. all the way from basic re-builds all the way to 600" + engines putting out in excess of 1000hp (of course with aftermarket blocks). great site for all 460 performance builds.

600 H.P on a non-emission 460 is not too hard. You don't even need to stroke it. If you are looking for compression just get some domed pistons. I have personally seen a 460 with an aluminum intake, iron heads, upgraded electronic ignition, domed pistons, ported, polished, 700 c.f.m carb and roller cam produce near 680 H.P . I know this list seems long but most parts are bolt-on or grind-on to an original '72' 460 engine.

Reliable 600hp is not too difficult to acheive. I built a 528 that was designed to run on 91 octain pump gas. It dyno tested at 646hp and 632 ftlb torque. I used an SVO race block and a set of Blue Thunder heads. I run a progressive controlled nitrous sytem on top of that but could not dyno it due to possible damage to the dyno. My compression is only about 9:1.

i wouldnt go the 557 kit... id go the 545 kit... only some blocks can take the .080 overbore for the 557, but any block can go .030 for a 545.
once you try to get over 1 hp/ci you start to lose streetability... my 545 build will be about 500 horse for that reason. im camming conservatively so i can still run it around town if i want to.

These guys know their no.'s...Where did you get the no.600?
It is easy to get that h.p. from a 460 but not necessasary. I run 429's and 1 460. I love the 385 motors. the 429 was to be what the bowtie 383 wound up being,Ford gave up the 429 when NASCAR went to sm. blk. then, during the not so proud era, Ford quit the racing scene.
However The old T-Birds have a 429 that, bone stock (with headers) will eat every street chev that ever had the nuts to try.
They are going quick...so are the 460's but thank Ford there is an aftermarket for the 385's. As stated by the big boys, the 514 can make 750h.p. on 94 octane.
My 4200lb. 69 T-Bird with the factory 4-link could handle that awsome power...but I dont see a need. Check into a marine app. 460. thats more than youll ever need for 3500lbs. and 12s without touching the motor.

What Id like to have is a 600 hp street/strip truck. Not a daily driver but if i wanted to make it one could I still have that kinda power and still be reliable? I plan on putting one in a 1970 ford 100. I would love to run in the low 11s. Is this possible and still be a daily driver?

not really... you could turbo it, supercharge it, or put nitrous on it, but the cam it would take for it to be naturally aspirated and that fast would take the daily driver option out of it... to get that fast you also have to overcome the fact that its a truck with terrible aerodynamics- which becomes a big factor when youre doing more than about 40 mph. youll also have to change your gearing (lower- probably 4.10 or 4.30). you may be able to get by with 600 horse but it wouldnt be pleasant to drive on the street.
