Welcome to FTE

When you say bad, what does that mean?

Grinding when shifting = Worn syncros can be replaced. 3 or 4 speed. All it takes are the syncro blocker rings, the shoes for the syncros, a small parts kit, gasket set and two seals. Make sure before doing anything, the clutch itself isn't the problem.

Problem isn't so much grinding except for reverse but also the shifter has a tremendous amount of play or slop.

This might be an easy fix, it depends on what trans it is. 3 or 4 speed?

We definitely need to know more info. F-150 or 250? Did they have a 3 speed of this era? I thought the only options were the M5OD, the T-18, or the ZF 5 speed?

(Post #1) 1989 F150 4x4 V8 transmission possibilities (depends on which V8 engine).

Ford 3 speed / Ford TS (single rail) O/D / Warner T-18 / Toyo Kogyo (Mazda) 5 speed / Z.F. 5 speed

This is a diagram of the Mazda 5 speed also called the M5R2 used on trucks. There is also a M5R2 that was used on the T birds that used a different shifter but shared some of the same parts as the trucks.

Figure 104 and 106 are black plastic bushings that usually crack and wear away.

You can purchase the bushings on Ebay. Ford may still sell them.

Remove the shifter boot and pull it up on the shifter shaft. You'll see 3 small torx bolts. Place the trans. in neutral. Remove the 3 torx bolts. Pull up and the shifter lever will come right out.

Look right below the two pins that are pressed into the top of the side cover. (figure 68 shows one of the pins) Right below will be one of the bushings. The other bushing will remain on the shifter shaft. It's possible bad bushings are causing your problem.
