Talking Locating and exhaust leak

Hey guys, what is happening? I am needing a little help. I have a 2000 Excursion with the V10 obviously. I bought the truck from a guy that had an aftermarket exhaust installed. Bringing it back down I noticed it had a leak. You can hear it when you are giving it the gas. It isn't horrible, but I can hear it and it drives me insane. So I have been under the truck looking to find it and my problem is I can hear it, but I can't tell where it is coming from. It is loud under there and then it starts getting hot pretty quick, so I can't pinpoint where it is. Anyone have any tips, tricks or general advice to help a brother out. Thanks in advance for all your help, hope everyone has a great 4th!
And remember those who can't be with us.

Cheers,
Shawn

leaky exhaust or not

The y- pipe on the early year V-10 is closer to a T-pipe so it makes a fluttery sound like an exhaust leak when excelerating. The only cure I found was to change the headers and y-pipe to a banks system. pricey but worth it....hope this helps

Actually the Y-pipe on early V10's were the Ram's horn design. The newer "T" style was put on to minimize the flutter.

Shawn, inspect all the exhaust studs to make sure they are there and intact.

Inspect the dust shield on the front of the bell housing to see if it is the culprit. Many threads about that one.

Pull up the corners (or try) on all the heat shields on the exhaust to see if maybe one of the welds has broken. This noise can be mistaken for an exhaust leak sometimes.

If everything chekcs out with those then what you are probably hearing is exhaust flutter. Live with it, replace with the newer style, necked down, T...er...Y-pipe.

You can also suck in a little trans fluid through a vacuum hose & look to see where the smoke leaks out.
