What computer do I need for a 5.0 L Ford?
I am building a 5.0 L from a 1988 Cougar to go in my 56 F100. I am shooting for the 350 h.p. range and am beginning to wonder what I am going to need for a computer. I would like to put a Mass Air Sensor on it, 24+ lb injectors, roller cam and possibly after market heads. I am wondering what type of computer I am going to need to hook my 5.0 up to. Will a newer Ford computer from a HO Mustang from 89 to 95 work on this set up? Will it "learn" to make the engine run like it should? If a factory computer will not work, where do I get one?
Thanks
George

FORD MOTORSPORT makes a cobra mass air conversion kit that comes with a new computer, mass air sensor and possibly injs too and is calibrated for 24# injs.the computer is for manual trans but you can use it with a non computer transmission like a c-4 c-6.look in any of the mustang magazines at various company ads and you will find one 549.00.all you need is wire harness from company like windsor fox.

The 302 HO or cobra ECU have a 351 firing order. Your regular 5.0 has a 302 firing order. To run the HO or cobra ECU you will need a HO harness and install a 5.0 HO cam. You can use a pre airbag car harness that had a 302 HO or a ford unit that is 225.00 , hotrod1783

My guess is that the '88 cougar was a H.O. motor, so the mustang computer would hook right up. If it were the truck firing order, all that would need to be changed is the order of the plug wires at the distributor, and the order that the injectors are hooked up (since mass air also makes it sequential EFI). Other than that, there shouldn't be much that needs to be changed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps.
