51 clearence/signal conversion

has anyone been able to get rid of the fender mounted front signal lamps, and combine them with the clearence/park lights?
I have purchaced sockets from D/C to take the standard 1157 bulb, but there is not enough room for the socket and the bulb!!
If the socket is seated in the lamp assembly it will fit into the lower vallence under the headlight bucket...But the bulb sticks out to far and the lens will not fit...I could push the socket back inward enough to make the bulb just clear the lens, but then the j-slots in the socket are exposed to moisture, and the bulb will probably melt the lens eventually...

Verry frustrating

Solutions and ideas would be verry welcome.

Thanks in advance

oilyowl.

I left mine where they were and changed socket and bulbs to 12 volt.

parking lights

I replaced my parking lights with a small amber signal light from Speedway. Remove the entire parking light assembly and use the wiring hole for the mounting post of the signal light assembly. Works great! P/N 316-0176 Universal Specialty Light (Amber). $9.95 Ea.

Will the 12V bulbs from the '56s fit in the '48-'52 parking lamp socket? I am also doing this swap and am betting this will work but don't have my bulbs yet to know for sure. If I ever get all my parts I will post up how it goes.

Buy new sockets from Sac Ford. Knock the old sockets out of the housing and press in the new ones. Then you will have a double contact socket for parking lights and turn signals. Real easy to do.

I did just that. Keep the old springs though, they are stronger and work better. I had to take new out and put old springs back in. Now I have no problems at all
