I presently have the V10 and get about 9 MPG's on average. To drop $54K on an 08 F350, CC, King Ranch Dually with the PSD is BIG money. So I am looking for some numbers for MPG's that will hopefully make the switch worth it.
The 2000 with banks system would get 22 the 08 got 19.5 and that was with less than 500 miles on it. A cruise at 65 got me 16.5 with the 6.4 and the 7.3 would do 17-18 When I compare directly with my 7.3 with Banks i see an average difference 0f 1-2 mpg drop with the 6.4. So basically with my driving style I don't see a significant difference in fuel econmy and most of my tests were done in the first 1000 miles.
p.s. Misterfisher, I have not had a single tank below 14 when driving empty.

Do we need to consider to low sulfur diesel when looking at mpg. I believe that it decreases mpg and power, it also smells like unleaded more that it smells like the old diesel. In January Me a 4 other Ford PSD drivers were filling up @ the Flying J Truck Stop in Tulsa, we all gathered around the diesel pump and took turns smelling it. (Looked like a huffing party) We even and the manager convinced that the supplier must have contaminated the tanks with unleaded. I then when to another fuel stop and it smelled the same way. I concluded that it was the LSD.....

I surely hope that the 6.4 will be a success, but only time will tell. I think many of the concerns for this new motor has mainly to do with the new fuel, exhaust, turbos, etc.
Ford was able to iron out just about every problem with the 6.0, and the 6.4 is basically the same block with a bigger bore and some major tweaks.
My 08' 350 DRW 6-speed CC w/3.73's is getting up to 17 mpg, pulls like a mule on roids, and hasn't let me down yet. Got almost 7,000 miles, and lovin every one of them. It's definately too early to declare victory for the 6.4, but so far they seem to be putting up one hell of a fight.

Just picked my 6.0 up for maintenance and asked the Service advisor how the 6.4's are holding up. He said in 6 months, they have only had a couple in. 1 for a rad end tank coming apart, and a couple for some silly stuff, not sure what, but overall he said that people are really happy with them. ~Brad

Even though the flamethrower is an amusing video, I don't think that qualifies as statistically significant.
So my question, I was planning on waiting until the end of this year, but I'm becoming cautiously optimistic rather than actively skeptical.
Does anyone have any metrics they're using to judge the new motors? I've got a 2000 7.3 that I don't want to trade until I'm confident...

In my own opinion I would like to declare Victory. I have own the 7.3, and the 6.0 (First year for it). Had no issue's with my 6.0. Burned circles around the 7.3. But this 6.4, wholey crap. I have over 4K miles on it, 3500 pully the teton up North to Alaska. Through some of the lets say very interesting road conditions. It is blowing the doors off of my last two trucks hands down.
I am very pleased with the truck and how it handles.
