Fluid types and levels....

I'm about to flush my difs, tranny, and transfer case, but there are a couple things I need to know. I was able to find the info about the tranny, but for the difs (f and r) as well as the transfer case, I need to know how much fluid, and what kind. I would consult the owners manual, but never got one. my truck is a 1997 Ranger V6 4.0L 4x4.

Thanks!

Fill the diffs to the bottom of the fill plug so that the oil just starts to spill out. I have no idea how much oil they will take.

As for the transfer case, some are lubricated from the trans, some are not. If it isn't, then there should be a fill plug on it. Fill it to the bottom of the fill hole just like the diffs. Again, I have no idea how much oil it will take.

Your owners manual will properly spec fluids, but I believe you will need ATF for the tranny and transfer case, and gear oil for the rear end. For the life of me I cannot remember what weight the rear end oil was. Either way, pop open your manual and it'll tell you at the very back.

Tranny: MERCON ATF
Transfer case: MERCON ATF
Diffs: API GL-5 SAE 90 hypoid gear lubricant (if you have limited slip, add four ounces of friction modificer)

Glad to be of service.

Make sure to add the friction modifier first if you have limited slip! Kinda hard to fill up the rear differential...then add four ounces to it. Put in the four ounces first, then fill the fluid.

To retrieve your owners manual, link here then select Owners Guide.

Ford Factory Fill Fluids

Check out www.chrysanstore.com for (5) gal. PAILS of a variety of Ford factory fill fluids including:
- Ford (ESP-M2C166-H) Type H ATF
- Ford (WSS-M2C938-A) Mercon LV ATF (new)

The engineering specifications are also posted there.
I hope this helps.

Ford actually specifies synthetic lube for the limited slip axles - 75W140 w/ friction modifier rather than the 85W90 that is spec'd for the non-limited slip axles.
