10k islands fishing over the weekend

hey guys,

i went to the 10k islands for some fishing over the weekend, 4 snook, 2 reds, 1 tarpon, some trout, ladyfish, a mackeral, all in all it was awesome its beautiful down there.

ok now to the topic, people here who have read my other threads on mpg for my 06.4.0 4x4, i am achieving about 16.5mpg highway.

from my house to calusa island marina in marco island is 186.2 miles. towing my flats boat total weight around 2800k, i made it on fumes. that was all highway at 3am no traffic,

i dont know if its a comperable number because 16.5mpg is an issue already.

any thoughts????

Mmmm mmmmm good fish!

How many miles do you have on it so far? I think I remember your other post saying 14K?

Have you had the codes pulled? Did you have overdrive locked out on the highway? Was the highway level?

I wouldn't expect 16.5 to be too bad pulling a 3K trailer actually, even as aerodynamic as a boat is, you're pulling a big brick through the air in addition to your truck. If you had OD locked out I'd say 16.5 is about right.

the 16.5 was achieved in november when i had about 10k on it, i went to mass for a road trip, through georgia on I95 i didnt touch the cruize control at midnight and made it 317 miles on a full tank of gas with the tail gate down.

i have about 14.5 on it now. i only used the o/d to climb some bridges, its pretty much flat all the way, took it out of o/d when not climbing.

truck handles my boat like its nothing, its just the mpg thing. it wouldnt be so bad if gas wasnt about to be 3 bucks.

Wait hold on... you took it out of OD when not climbing bridges? I think you mean that reversed. You leave it in Overdrive when just cruising, and then take it out at any time where it may need more power (i.e. climbing hills). Right?

Put the tailgate up. Hurts mileage to leave it down.

I wish I could get 16.5 towing. From brand new, about 17 mpg NOT towing is about the norm. Get close to 20 on 65 mph cruising.

No wonder you don't have a woman, you spend all of your time fishing ha ha. I wouldn't think 16.5 is bad towing anything. From reading many post on the subject, it seems around 18 city is the norm and 21 highway on these 4x4, 4.0 rangers. If you get better than that, concider yourself lucky, as I do. After reachering a little, I've found that there's no small 4x4 p/u's that get great mpg, it's not just a ranger thing. Nor do small suv's with a true 4x4 system like my jeep liberty, it gets 18/21. A guy I talked to with a 01 tacoma, 4 cylinder 4x4 only gets 18/22 and thats a 4 banger. The bottom line, a true4x4 system creates drag and weight that effects mpg. Some of these crossovrs do better, but they don't have a true 4x4 system, thier missing low range, it's more of an AWD system than 4wd.

lol, no 16.5 was on highway in georgia last november towing nothing....

i made 182 miles towing my boat on all flat roads except for a couple of bridges got there on fumes 17 or 16 gal tank.

sorry ranger i got i backwards, i turned over drive on climbing hills......u know what i mean, made the light come on for climbing, made light go off when on flat roads.

the thing with 16.5, that was through georgia on a highway, here in clearwater its all pretty much stop and go

16.5 on the highway unloaded is WAY low. What rear end gearing do you have?

Matt, what size Flowmaster you got? Mine was entirely too large and when I replaced it, my mileage went up a full MPG. Missed that torque...

i have an obdII reader, even though i dont have a light on, maybe i should just check it anyways wont hurt right??

all of my tires are inflated to best mpg performance. the sad thing is the 16.5 was highwaying it to the T, on cruize control at 62, which is a painstaking 4hr ride to empty a tank (317 MILES).

at best with the stop and go traffic i might be getting 13 or so, twenty dollars gets me 2 days of driving, of about 75 miles or so.

Ah it shouldn't be too bad then. I had a 3 inch in and dual 2.5 inch out and my torque dropped off badly. Much better now with a properly sized muffler (which is why you don't let people buy you exhaust parts!).

I have a 2wd, 4.0 pushrod, auto, with 3.55 open rear. combined city highway unloaded is around 17. has been since new. Haven't even figured towing the fifth wheel, doesn't matter to me towing.
