Throwing money away?
To each his own I guess but I would say "a waste of money" is a inacurate statement at least.

But like I said this is just an opinion of a lazy fair weather backyard mechanic.
I have asked in many forums over several years to show me an oil related engine failure when the oil was changed as specified by the manufacturer and the oil level was maintained. I have found no instances yet. I would say "a waste of money" is fairly accurate.

My cousin gets a new company vehicle every three years and has between 150,000 and 200,000 miles on his vehicles when he replaces it. He changes oil and filter every 10,000 miles with conventional oil and he has never had an engine failure in nearly 25 years. He had 147,000 miles on his 05 F-150 a month ago and he plans on keeping it past his normal replacement in August because it is still such a good truck.

My BMW oil change sensor light averaged 8.5 to 10.5 interval between oil changes. I adopted this practice and applied to the rest of my cars. Let me mentioned that I use Mobil 1 fully synthethic oil and to be in the safe side, I change the oil at 7.5K. Fully synthethic may saound expensive but in the long run....it's less work.

And better protection from what I have heard? This is my first experience with it. All 3k Quaker State conventional, all the time, previously.

Kevin: All the info I can find on the PN's relates to different heat ranges and a better nickel plating on the ground shield to help from carbon build up do you know something I don't?? Wonder if I just change my 04 plugs to a new part number if it would be better??? IMO it is a complete design flaw but short of a class action law suit ford will never admit to that.

LOL, just try and get them to pay for any damage their Oil caused...loop-hole city.

I agree, there are loopholes in it, but that doesn't mean your engine would self destruct after 14,999 miles, either. I'm not saying that's the best option out there, but at the same time I've never heard of anyone who follows the extended oil change intervals recommended with full synthetics have their engine blow because of oil.

Now, even as I say this, I am NOT going to use Mobil 1 or any other full synthetic in my truck. I like using conventional motor oil and changing it every 5k like the book says, becuase that's what I've always done.

I'm not quite as cynical as some are on this board. Probably a little naive, to be honest. Give me a few years, I'm only 21!

21? Wow. I think I remember 21. Anyway, I believe I will be going 7500 between changes with the Mobil 1. 15k sounds high even if it's OK. I've been religious with the 3k conventional changes on the wife's van, but I'm thinking I will change her to 7,500 mile Mobil 1 next time, too.

Additional food for thought. No doubt an occasional engine goes belly up due to sludge buildup. But how many folks have to get rid of their vehicle because the engine seized? Most folks trade a vehicle because they already put in a tranny and the next one is going bad or they don't think the vehicle reliable anymore or they have spent their last dime on all the other stuff that has to be repaired/replaced etc. Or maybe they are just tired of the old vehicle and are ready for a shiny new one.
