460 FORD -vs- 462 Lincoln engine, are there differences?

Is it the same block with different sleeves, or what?

Do the same hotrod options apply, or are there advantages/disadvantages.

A buddy wants to run one all the way to the firewall!

There is NO compatibility between the two engines!
The 462 is an MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) engine, not a "Ford" engine family. The MEL replaced the special Lincoln Y-block. The 462 was introduced in '66, if I remember correctly, and was dropped after '67.
The 460 is in the 385 engine family, and shares that family with the 429.
The 385 was a Lincoln division design, as evidenced by the "V" designation in the parts, e. g., D3VE for a '73 designed head.
The 460 was put into Ford trucks up to '87 for carburated versions, and FI into the mid '90s. You can use the '70s truck engine mounts in an earlier Ford truck, but the MELs were never used in the trucks.

So - you're telling me that it's a dead end, and a waste of time?

I owuld consider a better use of the time and money to put in a 460 - but that is my opinion.

Bingo.

462 replaced 430 in Lincoln 1966...it's a boat anchor....parts are scarce.

460 = the way to go.

The only thing remotely interchangable with other Ford engines is the mounts and back of the block configuration. The MEL shared it's mounts and rear block configuration with the Interceptor family at the time of it's introduction. As was previously mentioned, it replaced the big Lincoln Y-block. You can mount it to a C6 from a 390, or similar and use 390 mounts, but it is a heavy monster and as was also pointed out, no performance parts available.

462 mel

although there is no direct interchange of parts there are parts that can be used with some mods, I have a 460 with a 462 crank, the crankpins are .100 bigger in the 462, offset grind for a 4" stroke, the heads will also bolt on but a sheet metal intake is required along with some mods to reduce compression, works better than even the 429 cj/scj heads
