My '93 & '95 are both OBD-I and they both have MAF.

OBD-II started in late '95.

I think 92 would be the last year for map rather than maf.You can check this in autozone

Well.... Mercedes Truck use Boost pressure sensors (MAP) but not MAF, they say, MAF is not reliable enought for comercial transport, so I have a quation, is MAF of aero reliable enought? I know that it is an expensive part.

I have a 94 with MAF and no problems with the system other than occasional carbon buildup, which seems common to the 4.0

MAF's are very reliable Pablo,
many Aero's here with 200k miles on original MAF with just ocassional maintenance cleaning

Ford had to go to MAF system to obtain lower emission in later Aeros due to gov. regs, allows for more accurate dynamic air/fuel mix measurement

MAP works well on diesel since there is no need to maintain perfect low emission air/fuel mix...in fact a rich mix in a diesel is better for more HP, lower combustion chamber and exhaust temps and longer cyl. & piston life

we used to button up the injector pumps in 600 HP CATS to 1000 HP in logging trucks, black smoke would bellow out the exhaust stacks on a hard long hill pull....just put the throttle thru the pump and let her roar...3 gallons per mile

I never cleaned the MAF on my 1995 4.0L with 187K miles on it and I just used regular air filters too.

The MAf cleaning should be performed on a regular basis to keep omptimum economy. Regulat air filters are fine, but lifetime air filters and oil bases air filters are hard on MAFs, oil migrates from the filter to the MAf and ruins them.

As another reference, my 1990 model uses MAF.

I always thought that diesel engines smoke when they don't get enough air? Quite often you see them smoking a lot from take off because the turbocharger can't spool up fast enough, and thus can not provide enough air during the transition.

Do these MAP controlled diesel engines use the sensor to regulate the amount of fuel being injected? So they can supply the exact amount of fuel needed based on the available air, like gasoline engines?

Khanty! Here drivers use to disconnect pipe, leading from PCV and put gases from the crankcase to the atmosphere.... Yes. It saves MAF....

Abaut injector pumps in 600 HP CATS, Volvos and Cuminis diesels.... It is difficult to replace them and repare, becouse I need to take apart cyl. head. Electronically controlled pump units of Mercedes and Freightliner and electronically controlled Fuel Pumps of DAF (Kenworth) are easier to repare and serv.

For example, to remove injector of V8 MB diesel I need ro unscrew 2 bolts to remove cover of one head (8 heads, 8 covers), unscrew retainer (1 bolt), unscrew pipe nut and pull out injector. 15 minutes job, but to remove Volvo injector morer then 2 hours are needed, so I ask mechanics to do it.

Yes, they did it, this function is called "smoke limit". If there is not enought air (turbine is in the beggining of lug, old air filter, air leak from intercooler, altitude), MR (engine control unit) decrease fuel injection, but old fuel injectors may cause smoke too, and we have periodically check them and replace nossels and springs.

New diesel engines have smoke sensors, that work like 02 sensors, if there is a lot of smoke, MR decreases fuel/air ratio, even if the torque is lower and air pressure is enought.

To calculate air consumption of diesel 4 sensors are used - MAP (Boost Pressure sensor), Atmospheric pressure sensor, IAT (boost temperature sensor, installed in manyfold, after intercooler) and outdoors temperature sensor.

These sensors let to see not only how much air use engine, but the effectivity of intercooler, turbine and air leaks from boost line.

Mercedes and others didn't go with a MAP sensor because they may or may-not be more reliable, but rather, because MAP sensors can measure boost levels. If the vehicles computer cannot make adjustments for boost, the engine will not perform well, and can easily be damaged.

There are some OBD-II Fords in 1995. I am not sure if this includes the Aerostar or not, but there are most likely OBD-II Aerostars for the 1995 Model year.
