04 Ranger 3.0 - want a bigger battery: How?

Hello All,

I will soon be installing a Power Inverter in my Ranger and hence want a bigger battery than the stock 550CCA type. However, it appears that the battery platform is designed for only that 550 size battery.

Any thoughts or experiences on how I can get a bigger one in there?

Thanks,
CMOS

How much bigger do you want? There are 610CCA replacements out there.

How did you connect the 2 batteries, meaning what type of cables did you use. Since there are those special terminals on the battery POS side (under hood) that split up and go 2 palces - how did you do your setup.

I do agree that running a dual would be a great upgrade.

i have both top and side terminals on my battery under the hood. so i connected them using AU gauge wire and put fuses inches off of both batteries. I just connected them ++ and --- and it works great.

Those must be some serious fuses! What amperage rating are they and where did you get them?

Think what would happen if the cable going to the rear battery got chaffed on the chassis somewhere!

Check interstate, I believe they have one that will fit and will crank a little over 600 amps. That should be plenty to turn a V-6 even under most extreme conditions.

sfc,

I'm not concerned about cranking the Ranger. I want the added capacity because of the Power Inverter I'm going to inistall - 240 DC AMPS at full load!

A dual battery will help quite a bit.

go to advance auto. I got one for my ranger (94) that is an 800 CCA. What group size do you have? If its 58 i think the group size 65 is an optional replacement.

I bought a bigger battery at napa, it's a gel cell and looks like an optima. Has the 6 pack look and it's 850 cca. I have the 4 liter engine in mine. The new one was about 1/2 narrower so I had to fab a wooden wedge to hold the new battery down. I put it in to help with my winch, now I need a bigger
alternator.

When I look at the battery platform on my Ranger, it really looks like a physically larger battery will not fit, so I'm left with either running a dual battery (in a bed tool box) or removing that battery platform and fabricating one myself.

I'll play around with it a little more but the dual battery still seems like the best option.

Big_Al, can we get a bigger alternator on these Ranger's? I think mine is a 55 or 58 AMP IIRC. Thoughts?

you can get bigger and or dual alternators as well. i would recommend putting in gel cell batteries when and if you do something. my batteries usually recover enough for me to start my truck after ive had them completly dead

Is a bigger alternator a FORD product or aftermarket? Would I need to do anything to the wiring harness wire size if I do this?
