The hubs work on vacume so my guess is you have a vacuum leak evident by the switching to defrost on the hvac system. Defrost is the default position when the system loses vacuum. Did you have this problem before you dismantled the hubs. If so then I would start at the hubs and work your way back checking for vacuum cracked lines.

Before you go crazy hunting a vacuum leak, open the hubs back up. When I did mine I couldnt get mine to engage at first either, then I took out some grease, reinstalled them and they worked perfectly. I just put too much grease for the gears to move effectively.

But wouldnt the default to defrost when the system is activated indicate a vacuum leak

yes i did have the problem before i took them apart, about three months ago i tried to spray p.b. blaster on them to free them up and i saw bubbles coming out of the middle plastic dial where it says ford, my hubs still work in the lock setting! does any one know where i can get new o.e hubs other than the dealership, they want a small fortune for replacements?

You need to find out where you are losing vacuum before you replace the hubs. The hubs will not work with a vacuum leak.
