2000 f250 lariat SD 6 speed. first of all, this truck has been abused. not by me but my ex's little brother. i sold it to him and he wheeled the crap out of it, gave it back, and moved out of state. so my questions i have may be simple but are new to me. the hubs wouldnt disengage in auto or lock (obviously). when i engaged the transfer case it seemed to be ok. so i investigated. the hubs and vacume lines were full of dried up mud as far as i could see. as of last night, my 4x4 wont work at all. my defrost became stuck on too. the 4x4 light comes on and it goes into low range to. so i think its safe to say the transfer case is ok. my question is : even when i manually lock the hubs, is there something else that would keep them from working? do the vacuum work on the hubs? and finally, are the sealed hubs cleanable? i need to figure out how to fix this without spending anymore money on this POS. its definately not the trucks fault its that way. it was completely operator abuse.
I've been working this ame issue on my truck The vacuum works the auto hubs, to check for a vacuum leak or your case clog, clean out the vacuum port attach a mighty vac and pump up to 5 to 7g, it should hold. If it doesne'nt the seal at the knucle needs replaced. yes the entire knuckle has to come off. You can plug the vacuum port at the T line from the vacuum and and manually lock your hubs it will also fix you HVAC system so air won't just blow out the defrost vents. Finally according to guzzles web page the hubs are cleanable and can be seviced here is the link. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page

hope this helps, it sure did help me!
You need to clean the hubs first so you can manually turn them and engaged the 4x4 system. Then, tear into the vacuum system to find the leak. Having the HVAC system default to defrost is the tell-tale sign of a vacuum leak in the 4x4 system. You might find that you have a broken line to the hub and/or a bad seal in the interior of the hub.
wow what a write up. its like he was talking directly to me. the funny thing is that on my way to the shop the vent selector started working again. the vacuum lines are all so cloged up that i unhooked them right around the shocks and they were full of mud there too. anyway i jacked up the the truck truck and found that it it is definately the hubs. i put it in gear and watched it spin the cv's but not the hubs. it felt like the left front was grinding. thanks for the write up, i know what im up to this weekend now
My problem with the auto hubs is that they would not disengage once using them. I had to reach in and rotate the axle while turning the hub **** back and forth. I finally got fed up and switched to Warn manual hubs and capped off the vacuum lines permanently. I never lost vacuum so my lines are ok, just blown hubs. I cleaned my old set a couple of times with decent luck but still they were sticking in the lock position.
i investigated and decided to switch. i found a new set of warn hubs for $150 so i went and picked them up. automatic is always nice but ill be happy to avoid more problems. had the truck not been so abused i would have not had this problem to begin with
