1956 322

Hi y'all, still confused about the motors. My truck book says that the 332 was out in '56 but it also says that the 312 was the biggest Y block available and the 332 FE came out in '58. Would someone be so kind as to explain what motor the 332 in 56 actually was please.

There are two very different 332 engines.

The 332 Y block: Big trucks only (Never offered or used in a F100-350)

*** ***

The 332 FE block: this engine was never offered in trucks..it was introduced in 1958 for FoMoCo passenger cars.

Thanks for that guys. That explains a lot. My Ford engines book only mentions the 312 as the largest Y Block and the www.ford-y-block.com mentions the motor but not what it came in.

Can I also ask what air brake or air over hydraulic package came with the Big Job trucks in the mid 50's as I'm looking at running it with a 5th wheel and drop deck semi.

You should start a new thread on that topic...under the 48-56 forum..your Q's may be overlooked here, as this is an engine Q thread.

I thought the 312 was never offered in a truck, except possibly the ranchero. But it was never offically offered in a F series truck. And I thought that there was an option for a Lincoln-type hydraulic-lifter Y-block in the smaller F series trucks. I'll double check in my Ford Service Manual for 53-54.

6500's

You are correct, the 312 never was offered in a truck...and the hydraulic lifters were from Mercury.

312's went into Ford, Mercury and T-Birds.

Technically the FE engines are Y designs too.

Ford did sell trucks with the 'Lincoln' type engine, but in 1954, they didn't go into the F100. In fact, in 1954 the only trucks with the 279/317 engines were F600's and larger.

It was interesting to see that the 256 Y-block was used in big trucks. Somehow, I thought that was a car-only engine.

That means that all Ford Y-blocks, from 239 through 292, were used in trucks. 239, 256, 272, 292, but not the 312 (although there are rumors that some factories used leftover 312's in trucks.)

The 1949-1951 Lincolns used the big truck (F-7) flathead V8 engine.

I am not aware that any Ford truck used a 256 Y block V8...my understanding was that engine was only used in the 1954 Mercury.

RE: 256 in big trucks, I'm looking in a copy of the shop manual for the 53/54 series trucks. In the 1954 section of the manual it has a chapter that describes the 239/256 engine. It calls the 239 an EBV and EBW, and the 256 is called an EBZ. In chapter 8, a section of tables, there is a table that lays out the carburetors used in the various models. The EBZ 256 is shown as being in the 600-700 series truck. But I'm no expert.
