55 F-100 4SPD Tranny, manual or automatic?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Apr-02 AT 06:57 PM (EST)]I Have a 55 Ford F-100. Vin #'s are as follows. *F1OV5L-10014* ( Serial No.) (Max G.V.W.) 5000 ( W.B.) 110 (Cert. Net H.p at R.P.M.) 113.5 3600 (TRANS)3-O.D. (REAR AXLE) 4.09 (COLOR) CE (PRODUCTION CODE) 25K-LP1D. It belonged to my grandfather. He bought it new in 55. It still has the 239 engine that it came with but according to my grandfather around 57 or 58 they changed the transmission over to a manual floor shift model. The truck sat next to the barn at thier ranch in northern california for around 40 years. He didn't like the ride on the 39 mile two track trip to town so he bought a car around 1959 and gutted the back out to haul stuff. The manual transmission that he put into the 55 ford is not the original. I am trying to find out what the original 4Spd transmission should be. Manual or automatic. on the hood there were two emblems. Unfortunatly when my grandfather had his first stroke in 83 someone stole most of the parts off the truck including the emblems off the hood. I am attempting to restore the truck back to original. I have most of the parts collected up that it needed. nothing real major. the only part that I am stumped on is the transmission. I am not sure weather it was an automatic originally or a manual. the steering column was stripped when they were stealing all the parts from it so there is nothing but the stearing column and a bracket that appears to have had a shift column thru it at one time. any help would be appriciated. thanks . oh by the way. I learned how to drive in this truck when I was 10. my grandfather is now 85 and after 5 strokes doesn't remember much anymore.

get the Vin number and all the other info you can off the data plate. I'm not exactly sure where they are on the 55, either the door jam or the glove box, but post all that on this site and it can be deciphered for you to know what tranny is supposed to be in it.

The trans code of "3OD" is the code for a 3 speed with overdrive, which would have been a manual trans. The emblems that you are probably missing are the Ford gear/lightning bolt emblem and the emblem that says "Overdrive" Both are available repro, i believe. So be on the lookout for a column shift, 3 speed overdive trans if you want to put the truck back to original.
