Emblem restoration

I am currently having all my chrome emblems re-plated by my chrome plater for my 1960 Ford F-100. I am having the emblems plated by my plater (because he does the best chrome I have ever seen), but they will need to be re-painted afterwards. Does anyone know of a place that specializes in emblem painting/restoration? Just painting them by hand or spray can does not work (it all chips and fades a few years after), and no one sells the hood emblems for the 1960 model. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I think it would be cheaper, and less of a hassle to find new reproduction emblems for your truck. I had some emblems re-chromed, and they looked nice, but after buying new ones Ill never do that again. Just hunt them down. SOMEONE has to make them for your vehicle.

Unfortunately, no one is reproducing them for the '57-'60 at this time. Sorry, I don't know of anyone who specializes in the painting aspect of restoring the emblems.
If you do end up painting them yourself, you might try and lightly "scuff" the area to be painted with a fine sandpaper. This will help keep the paint from chipping off.
I believe the red color they used was "Torch red". From the Ford truck parts catalog......

Torch red-laquer = part # M4J 175
Torch red-Synthetic enamel = part # M1J 175

I'll look in my Hemming's Motor news and see if there is an emblem specialist listed. Hope this helps

I think you can go to the part store and get some touch up paint in a little bottle to paint your emblems, it's thicker.

I don't know if this will work but if you were to mask off the painted areas and then lightly glass bead or chemically etch the surface. Lastly have them powder coated. I know the mask will be the hardest part. I think you can use a liquid masking agent that would hold up to the beading or etching. Maybe somekind of a similar compound like they use in printed circuit board etching.

Probably impossible but maybe someone can work with my ramblings.

um....testors model paint and a womans eyebrow brushworks nice and when it dries you can take #0000 steel wool to the edge to get the paint off of it.

I found a company by the name of Classic Auto Services who specializes in such tasks, and is going to do all the paint restoration work on the emblems. As far as purchasing new emblems, no one is making the 1960 F-100 hood emblems. You can purchase a set of Custom Cab emblems through reproduction companies for $99.00, but I am having my re-plated for $70.00 total, and this guy does the best chrome work I have ever seen (far better than the repro ones). I'll let you guys know when the emblems are finished and how they turned out. My plater is about 2-3 weeks behind right now, so it will be at least a month until the plating then painting is finished.

Sign painters and pinstripers swear by 1-Shot enamel. It would be my choice for durability. However, the Testors model stuff is alot cheaper. The prep and masking advice is all good... I would ask my plater how he would etch the chrome for a little "tooth" if you expect any paint to stick to chrome. good luck. himmelberg

Etching primer before you paint might help the paint stick better.

For the heck of it I looked up the emblem in my Ford parts catalog and looked for some NOS ones. Antique auto in Texas (1-817-275-2381)has the right side (CoTB 16720-A) and the nose emblem (CoTB 16607-A). Wesley Obsolete ( 1-606-787-5293) lists the Hood nose emblem. THought someone might want NOS.
