I have been looking at one of these in a gas station side lot for last 10 years. A tree has completely grown over it so only the tops of the doors down are visible. I am pretty sure it has a 2-speed diff. from a conversation I had with the owner years back. It has a standard pick-up bed and looks pretty much like an F-100 except for the height. I have forgotten the motor except that it is a V8. I would assume it is a 312.
Can anyone tell me anything more about the model as far as what distinguished it from the F-100? I am only looking for model generalities here as to motor, trans, detail on rear diff. suspension, brakes & wheels. In other words, how did these trucks typically get set up? If there is a website that gives greater detail on the 1950's F600's, please post it.

Start by finding the VIN plate which is inside the glovebox door. That will tell you the year, engine, tranny, rear, etc.
If plate is missing then check on the top frame rail, passenger side just ahead of the cowl.
Post that here and one of us can decipher it for you.
Dont be suprised to find a lot of strange stuff swapped around. A p/u bed did not come on the 600.
Engines could be 239, 256, 272, 292 or even a 6 banger. A 312 could have been swapped as well as a Lincoln Y 317, 341, 368.

Thank you for the guidance. Not knowing much about the F600's a bed installation did not even cross my mind. Thanks for the heads up.

Speaker,
Sounds like you have your eye on a great tow vehicle!
286Merc has pretty much covered it. Folks on this board are a great resource for decoding VIN information, and just a general wealth of knowledge. I will add that if it is a '56, I think the VIN plate will be on the cab A-pillar (forward) on the driver's side. That's where mine is anyway. 53-55 are on the inside of the glove box.
Good Luck

that is a very good question, I have a 55 f-600, and I have no idea what motor is in it but I would like know. So if you find someone who can decifer this let me know. Here is what I can tell you about 55's The id tag is inside the glove box. Mine came with a 2-speed rear diff, and a four speed. The gvw is 16000. Hope this can be of some help to you
