460 power steering/alternator bracket

I'm not sure where to find the 400 to 460 swap info but i had a question regarding the motor i am looking to put in. It still has the alternator and bracketry but not the power steering mount. It is in a 74' f-series. Do i need to scrap the old alternator and get the brackets from l and l to swap it into my truck, and do i need to get the transfer brackets for the power steering or can i get a power steering original mount for the truck or wont that hook up to my steering.
thanks

The alt. and power steering brackets will depend on if your truck is 2wd or 4wd on a 79 F-250.

If the alt. is mounted up high it will work. If not it'll hit the crossmember. You need powersteering brackets that will mount the pump up high also to clear the steering box. I use the stuff off the mid 70's cars and cut the AC mount off. It sticks out to the side and hits the steering box. The problem with the L&L stuff is that you have to buy their pulleys also so that every thing will line up. I've done several swaps and have always used factory parts.

The mounts are down low for the alt. so i will have to find an alternative mount. It seems like you are know your stuff so i was wondering what bracket mounts you took yours off of for the alt and pwr str? The other question i had was what is the best way to get the power steering mounts to hook up to the 79's 400 power steering? I could fab up some brackets but i'm not sure what the BEST way is to do the alt. and the power steering.

thanks for help

I'm not really sure what the alt. bracket that mounted it high came off of. I thought it was from a mid 70's 2wd. I've only had to put an alt. on one 79 F-250. The F-150's and highboys can use the low alt. The power steering will need to be from a 70's car. It is a big metal plate that bolts to a cast iron bracket that bolts to the water pump and head. Some of the 80's truck stuff might work too. I've never used any of it.

I sold a set of brackets from a mid 80's tow truck that had the alt mounted high. Matter of fact I have an 87 460 setting at the shop and it may have the higher mounted alt. I will try to check tomorrow. I now the PS pump got snagged before I got to the motor but everything else is still on the motor.

On one of my trucks I used the L&L brackets (alt. & p.s.). The alt. bracket is a low mount and does not hit the cross member, the p.s. bracket is for the old style steel pump not the plastic pump. I was able to use all stock pulleys for these two brackets and have had zero trouble with them. (very good peices) I have used the L&L engine mounts on this one too. The only issue I have with them is that they are a bit on the pricey side. I bought mine from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard.

My other truck I used the stock brackets from the car that the 460 engine came from, a 1975 Ford LTD. Again the alt. bracket is a low mount and does not hit the cross member. The power steering pump from this car was a "saginaw gear" pump like the old GM style. The bracket was the A/C - p.s. bracket. It bolted to the water pump with two or three bolts and I had to make a support bracket from the cylinder head to the bracket for strength. This bracket comes very close to the power steering box but does not hit it. (the bracket could be trimed off if it was necesary) I have used the performance unlimited engine mounts in this truck. http://performanceunlimited.com/cust...ginemount.html -Ed

PS- my trucks are 1977 F-150's with 460 C-6 set up.

The crossmember is different on the F-150 than on a 79 F-250 and the low mount alt. brackets won't work. The power steering brackets that you used from the 75 LTD are the best thing to use on a 79-F250. They used them all though the 70's on both Ford and Lincoln cars. There should have been a big cast iron piece that went between the head and the flat bracket. I think the saginaw pump works better than the stock Ford pump also.

yeah, greenhighboys got it, the f250 is diff. Jeffs bronco graveyard seems to be a litle cheaper on everything but it doesn't even have 79' f250 alt. bracket, thats the problem i'm having. maybe i'll call them up and see if they can get it.
Do i have to have the 2 sheave waterpump and 4 sheave crankshaft if i get the new alt. and pwr. steer brackets? or are they just optional.

What models did the saginaw pump come in? How well does this convert into the 79'. Did anyone figure out what the high alt. mount came from.
thanks
