Symptoms of a bad IP
I am still trying get my truck figured out in terms of engine noise (ticking, rattling) and bad mileage. I just installed my pyrometer on the DS manifold and a boost guage to find out a little more of what's going on. @Idle, the exhaust runs 300 deg and entering a highway at full throttle I can get the temps to hit 1000 with 7 PSI boost. I was happy to find out that the turbo is working correctly and the exhaust is kind of where it should be with the stock exhaust.
I just changed the injectors and return lines and the tick noise didn't go away. I need to crack the lines again to verify the new injectors I got are OK as I probably rushed through that test to get the truck back together. So then I was wondering what some of the symptoms of an injector pump going bad would be.
I still think I have an exhaust leak but that wouldn't explain the bad mileage.
Thanks.

Hi PLC,
1994 7.3 Turbo Diesel, E40D rebuilt trans, 3.73, 167k,
Just replaced: fuel filter with a Racor unit, Injectors, Return lines.
Added K&N filter with ram air entering DS radiator.
Added the gauges and have the ATS upgrade on order with a 4" bully dog exhaust.
IP may have been changed by the previous owner as it is not painted gray.
The thing I started wondering about is if the IP is going bad, would it effect the injectors even if they were new and cause them to fire incorrectly, tick and have bad mileage?

Hi Dave,
What did the truck feel/sound like when it was changing while driving?
Why would and exhaust leak before the turbo effect the mileage?
The power was good before I started the ticking noise troubleshooting. I didn't have a noticeable power increase after I changed the injectors. After I advanced the timing a tad, the engine smoothed out and alot of the smoke went away. The engine was much more responsive and did seem like it had more power.
If the IP is going bad, would it cause one if not all the injectors to tick..especially if it is not providing the right pressure to the injectors?

The timing was fast and doing the Power Stroke rattle one minute, smooth and no power the next, then rattling again.
Since the exhaust drives the turbo, any exhaust leaks before the turbo will drop the amount of boost the turbo produces. Less boost, less power and probably excessive black smoke which is fuel that was not completely burnt due to lack of air.
Most usually ticking injectors are a result of injectors that are letting compression back into the injector because the injector valves are not working correctly.
Were the injectors you installed new or rebuilt?

The injectors I installed were new. Since I am getting 7psi I would think my leak is most likely after the turbo. When I push in the advance lever, smoke bellows into the engine compartment. I would think this isn't normal.
I have been looking for a leak but not very hard as I am waiting for the ATS upgrade to show up.

My 93 N/A had a tired out IP with 245000 km on it, ran good but seemed to have a single tick sound like one bad lifter or injector or ?? I did not know, unless it was really warmed up like after an hour long drive, even after I installed rebuilt injectors. I finally put on a rebuilt IP from Diesel Care and Performance, cost me 265 USD on sale E-baY. Now my truck performs well, smokes a bit at WOT and sounds great, has a diesel quack quack sound at idle, and gets up and goes when I tromp on the pedal. I think all you turbo guy's are missing the KISS principle, I've opened up my intake, have 3" out of the manifolds, and I'm ordering a set of headers tommorrow! Get 'er done!

FWIW, Napa sells them in my area for $431.99, BUT this Saturday is their "15% off everything in the store sale". That puts their price at $367.19. Not sure if the extra 6 months warranty is worth the extra $100 or not......

I'm thinking that I may change the IP just because I want to eliminate that. I pulled off the DS valve cover to look at the valve train and that side was fine. I ran out of time for the PS. This tick noise is sort of mechanical/hollowish in nature and increases in frequency with RPM. Sounds like valve train noise in a gasser. I couldn't pinpoint a single area with a stethoscope so I am looking for other possible things to check and replace.
