'95 Hard Starting

I have a 95 F250 with the powerstroke diesel that has 212K miles. In the mornings the truck does not want to start. I will cycle the ignition switch several times and let the truck set a minute with the key on and then it will start with white smoke out the exhaust and the truck shaking. Even when it's warm the truck shakes for a second or two. I have heard that they had problems with the glow plug relay however the one on my truck looks like it's been replaced recently. It's also stamped "made in mexico". Is that a Ford part or a Kragen auto parts special?

after you check the gp relay and the GP's

try UVC Harness.

Under valve cover gasket has wires going to GP's & injectors.

Look for burnt or unpluged connectors

Here's where most of the sensors are on you truck.

If you have a needle instead of an idiot light for your ammeter watch it when you turn your key on. It will go to the N of Normal then pull to the left. If you wait long enough it will come back to the N.

If you needle doesn't go left a couple of seconds after going to the on position your relay is likely bad. Or the harness, all the glow plugs etc.

If you have a multimeter you can check for voltage on your glow plug when some one turns on the key for you.

Cut and paste the following into the search at the top of THIS forum, +glow +plug +relay ,and you will have many hours of enjoyable reading.

I tend to concour with anyone who say's it's the relay, harness wires, or the plug's its alway's one of those. Sometimes if you tighten stuf down it work's better.

How cold is the ambient temp? You should be able to start it very easily without glowplugs down to about 60, and with a little more cranking down to about 45-50. Any colder then this, glow plugs are needed to make it start easily. If it is 65 or above and doesn't start well without glowplugs you also have some other issues that may or may not be serious.

I just went out and checked and when the ignition is on the volt gauge stays at N in normal until the engine is started. It's in the low 60's in the mornings

I checked and there is juice coming out of the two 1/2" terminals on the relay and on one of the smaller ones.

Update

I put an ohm meter on the connector on the valve cover side and it's dead except for the last prong in the connector.

if your needle didnt drop almost to the 8 when you turned on the key your gpr is shot. unless your truck was hot.

Yes the truck was hot. I'm going to have to take the truck on a 4 hour roundtrip to the airport on friday. If the glow plug has failed will the truck leave me stranded?
