fuel bowl heater

Does anyone know how much I'm looking at to replace my fuel bowl heater? I just got done changing the filter and two of the three solder joints are broke. It doesn't really look too hard to change, am I right?? Thanks!

If you're not up north somewhere you dont need it at all. I've been running without one for a few years now with no issues, but this is VA...not Northern Michigan...lol

I'm in NW PA, it's been like this for atleast a winter or two (I'm guessing). Never paid too much attention to it. Had some smokie starts when cold but nothing bad. Fires right up off the glow plugs. Might try resoldering, what could go wrong..

Their is a upgrade you can do that uses the heavier duty fuel bowl heater from the superduty powerstrokes. I'll pm the link to ya.

Replace, upgrade it or disconnect it. It will short out taking out the fuse your computer is on and shutting down your truck - always at the most inconvenient time. I live in the coldest location in the lower 48 and ran with mine disconnected all last winter (still is) and we had the 4th coldest winter on record -25 F to - 40 F every morning for almost four months. I never experienced any problems not having it but we also run good winter mix fuel around here. If you make sure you run winter mix in the cold, a little power services fuel additive, you should have no problem.

One advantage I've noticed is that not having it connected seems to dump more juice into the glow plug circuit making the the plugs hotter and start easier. At least this seems to be what is happening in my case.

Thanks for the part numbers and description, doesn't look like a hard mod to do. Come to think of it I have a filter housing off one of my old spare busses sitting around (95 IH 444E). Had to change it when the drain valve guts went bad, it might still have the heater in it?

Not sure you'll even find a fuel heater in the bus housing. When i went to my IH dealer a few years ago to get a replacement heater, they said International doens't spec their trucks with them, you don't need it. Maybe the bus engine would have it, if it was a Ford model.

Otherwise, i live in Northwestern Ontario, and have been running without one since then. Never had one problem, but i also use Stanadyne in each tank fill year round.

Yep, no heater in the bus housing. It was an option but not equiped. I've never had very good luck running additives during the winter. Seemed to increase my waxing chances with the busses. Since then I just cut it with Kerosene and haven't had a problem since.

Yep, I don't know if I got a bad batch or what but I tried a few different brands and nothing seemed to work very well.

Fuel bowl heater terminals etc.

My fuel bowl heater blew the power leads going into the fuel bowl last November. From Dec. to Feb. I was having stalling problems in cold weather, fuel starvation. Once the engine temp came up all ran fine. Only found the problem this May when I did the O-rings on the IPR valve. The terminal into the fuel bowl was cooked. Still need to fix this before the cold weather hits.

Now, I did replace (the local mechanic did) the fuel bowl heater 2 years back. Had to buy the feul stem, it snapped taking out the old heater. This is common according to Ford. Also, you will need a deep socket or a Ford special tool to remove the stem. I believe the mechanic who did mine welding 1 socket to another to get the reach. How, did this all start, because I kept blowing the fuse which runs the computer, which also runs the heater, good going Ford.

My question, can this terminal be replaced, or am I looking at a new fuel bowl?

thanks
db
