Unhappy two-tone tips???

hey,
I'm going to paint my truck this summer and I was thinking of doing a red/white/red two-tone paint job on it. What is the best way to paint it? Should I prime then paint red/white sections or prime, paint the whole truck one color and then paint the other colored sections??? I have no idea what to do. Please help

I am doing a two tone on my 77 f150. I primed the whole truck, then I will shoot the "smallest color" (between the racetrack trim, and top of cab). 3 coats, let flash, wait 2 hours, mask off. Then shoot rest of truck color, let flash (1 hour or so), unmask first color, then clear the whole truck. The trim and molding remain masked during the whole ordeal.

My only additional suggestion is to remove the trim, run the tape line edge centered where the trim/moulding would be, and spray, flash off, wait 2 hours, and reverse the tape line on the same edge in the center and continue the paint. The trim/moulding when put back on will hide the paint line. If you have the one straight trim piece, this will become evident on the ends where the trim/moulding stops.

Good tips Fozz,

Havi nailed it right on, I will add to his post. Just want to mention that whenever clearcoat is "broken" at the racetrack trim, the coats of clear will have a "open" ended edge where it is sprayed to the tape line. A open edge that water/salt, will penetrate in to and eventually make the clear flake under the trim. I removed my racetrack trim when I sprayed my 79. That way the clear coats cover competely over the basecoats with no open edges on the clear coats. Think one big wrap. It is a pain to remove the RTT without damaging it I know, plus you will need some new fasteners and its a real pain to re-install. For whatever its worth and just a FYI . jmo
