Transmission stops catching while driving! 97 explorer 4x4

Heres is the deal. I have a 97 ford explorer 4x4. I am renting to own i guess you could say from a relative who knew it had problems to begin with. She said it just wouldent work, that the transmission was shot. So I put it in gear, took a few seconds, then went fine. Put it up on the trailer and took it home, changed the tranny filter and fluid thinking maybe it just needed some maintenance. It went fine for 3 days of short driving. Then the 4th day i took it out a while while doing some running around.

It started to slip a tad as i was driving, then i came to a stop light and bam, wouldent move. took it out of gear, put it in every gear, nothing.

So I take it the torque converter must be shot?

I know that the transfer case must be bad, i was told it had metal shavings in it. I put it in 4 wheel high to see what happens and it grinded for a split second and i took it back to normal.

I have a 98 explorer that as rolled, but engine tranny and transfer case are all supposably good.

Can, or should i swap them over to a 97? I have everything out of the 97 already (tranny and transfercase) . I wanted to make sure that the stuff from a 98 would fit in it. but the engines look different, from what i noticed the sparkplugs were on different sides of the engine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! please help asap! i gotta get this rolling so i can get to work!

Spark plugs on different sides?

Well, maybe you have a pushrod in one vs. an SOHC in the other.

'98s are no better than '97s for tranny issues.

The pushrod motor is down on power, but the SOHC has an unreliable cam chain set up.

If the '97 has the pushrod motor, and the drive train from the '98 will fit, swap it AND GET RID OF IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

If it has the SOHC motor, do the same, AND GET RID OF IT FASTER.

Proud owner of a '98 here.......

97 has a SOHC, and the tranny and transfer are *****ed. The 98 was rolled about 8 times but still has good trans end transfer. So taking them out putting in the 97. Everything will line up and all electrical things will match?
