Octane booster in bottles?

Octane booster in bottles?
Did you ever wonder if the octane booster you buy in the little bottles is actually just diesel? It looks like diesel smells like diesel and diesel is less volatile than gasoline. I was wondering how much diesel you would have to add to a gallon of 85.5 or 87 octane unleaded to raise the octane to 91 or 92. It seems like it should work in theory. The higher the octane # the less volitile the fuel thus preventing preignition. Diesel is much less volatile and adding it to low grade gasoline should produce the desired result. The only question is how much to add per tank. My guess is about the same amount as comes in those little bottles. If a water injector works why shouldn't this?

Well, if each bottle raises the octane level three "points" (as in .3 octane points ) and you want to up the low grade stuff by ~7 points, toss in 21 bottles of octane booster. Per fill up.
If you want to break that down to 1 gallon versus about ~20 gallons per fuel tank (like my Ranger), well, tossing in octane booster well over what the label recommends is bad enough.
I'm sure just getting the higher grade go juice from the pump is the better way to go. Especially if that means you are running a full tank of gas with about (just guessing) at about a 1/4 of that being octane booster.

The octane booster I have seen claims to treat about 20 gallons of gasoline per bottle. Each bottle I am guessing is about a pint. So, to treat one gallon should take 1/20th of a bottle (or pint) of store bought treatment. Where did you come up with .3 octane points per bottle per gallon?

It has been suggested that adding a small amount of acetone to your gas tank can add 10% - 35% to your fuel mileage. This works because acetone is a surfactant for gasoline - acetone reduces the surface tension of gasoline rather dramatically, allowing the droplets to evaporate more quickly and burn more completely. This means better fuel mileage and less pollution. In fact many mechanics for years have used acetone to improve an old engine's pollution performance and get the engine to pass a smog test.

The best bet for anyone needing higher octane fuel is just go buy some unleaded high octane race fuel and mix it with pump gas to acheive the desired octane. If you're inquring about octane boosters because you're having detonation or pre-ignition issues, then you need to fix your engine, not put a band-aid on it.

MEK is some of my favorite stuff! I keep a can around for cleaning stuff as well as some Methylene Chloride, Acetone, Toluene, Xylene, Alcohol (both Methyl and Ethyl) as well as Mineral spirits, Stoddard Solvent, Naphtha, Kerosene, etc. It is best to keep these things in a nice flammable storage cabinet tho.
If a little acetone in the gas would make cars get 10-35% better mileage the auto makers would already specify that it be in the gas. Don't believe some of the hype you here on late night infomercials and ads in the back of magazines...
