Building '95 4.9 for E85

I have a '95 F-150, 5 speed. Eventually, I will build a gasifier to go in the bed so I can run on woodgas. But, the mods for woodgas are the same as for ethanol... raise the compression, advance the timing. So, how about rebuilding the tired 300 specifically to run on E85/E99 now?

I'm wondering about the injectors and the OBD-1 electronics. Should I add a crank sensor and go to a Megasquirt or similar stand-alone system?

I'm not wanting to build for speed but rather for economy. Some say that theoretically, being able to squeeze more power out of the higher octane fuel, you can regain much if not all of the lost mpg by building specifically for E85 or straight ethanol.

Ultimately, I want a vehicle that I can run on fuels I can make. I've run my '02 7.3 on WVO/biodiesel for over a decade and have been involved in gasification since '08.

Suggestions? This is a research project on my spare truck. Oh, and as a side note, I detest E10 gasoline.

Not sure on the E85 side of the fence, but you will want to make sure that the fuel system is E85 rated (or better), also octane is how well the gas is RESISTANT to detonation not how "economical" it is or any of the other jazz people "claim " it to be...

Oh yes, with well over 200,000 miles on biodiesel and used cooking oil plus being in the chemical business, I well understand chemical compatability.

Some who are into alcohol as a fuel feel that being able to take advantage of the higher octane through higher compression and advanced timing, the mileage may not be that different from the same engine on gasoline... IF you build the engine for ethanol.

This is a personal research project with an eye toward fuel independence. I want to be able to make my own fuels. I have located a race shop with a chassis dyno. My plan is to run the stock 300 engine on woodgas and then run it again when the engine has been specially built for the fuel. Stock engines lose 35% or more horsepower on woodgas. My question is: How much lost hp can we recover with an engine built for the fuel?
