01' F-350 7.3l diesel A/C Problems

Quick question for a quick awnser hopefully as the local Ford dealership is awaiting my decision. Ford has my truck in for a/c problem I lost all but 2 ounces of freon out of the system. I did notice a nasty oilly residue on the back of the a/c compressor and the two lines comming off of it. They say that the pop off valve on the back of the compressor is shot and needs replaced and while they are at it they will replace the two o rings for the lines comming off the compressor, then recharge the system. They said it will only take about 2 hours.

They want $585.00 to do this. Is there such a thing as pop off valve and is that price a little high?

Sorry this is so quick and to the point but they are waiting for me to get back to them.

the price sounds very high to me. there is a vavle in the system that vents when the high side pressure rachs a certain pressure. make sure to fix that problem(why did the pressure get so high) before spending any money on recharging the system.

all they told me is that the pop off valve is on the back of the compressor and is weak and was allowing the system to leak off. This leaking of the system has been a gradual thing, that is why I question this pop off valve.

They are only charging you $500 too much.

Do you have any idea what it costs the owner of that dealership to fill up his plane so he can fly around just for the heck of it?

Replace the o-rings and get it evacuated and recharged.
They will use a leak detector to "sniff" their work and the pop=off valve.
If its leaking, its a simple fix.
Recover the R134a, R&R the valve, evac and charge. Maybe another $50 repair.

I went last nite and picked up my truck and asked that a tech (not the one who worked on the truck though) show me this pop off valve and he said he did not know what I was talking about and all he could guess was the high pressure shut off switch but that there is no reason for that to leak. There is a little oily residue again right where the two lines come into the compressor.

I opted to just take the truck without Ford fixing it. I went to parts and bought a new pressure cutoff switch and the two o-rings for only $14.18. I will replace them myself then take the truck in to have the system charged. I think in the end that I will have saved my self about $500.00.

Thanks for the replys.
