FTE Code Decoder says I have 3.55LS...

I was just curious and decoded my VIN and my sticker. Well there was a code for the Axle and it said H9. The decoder says that that is for a 3.55gears with Limited Slip? I didnt know I had that!!! What is the difference with having limited slip as oppse to having a free rear end? Is it a "locker"? I am pretty confused...I didnt even know I had it! But does the LS make a difference when the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive?? Thanks

IMO, A limited slip rear end is akin to a love - hate relationship, i.e. you either hate it or you love it.

I'll take a LS or a locker any day, but there are some people that dislike them in the winter especially if they are unfamiliar with the characteristics of a LS unit. Going around a icy corner with out the 4x4 engaged with a LS rearend can create a spooky spin if you have to goose the throttle.

Having a LS unit really makes your truck much more effective in terms of traction than any 4x4 with out a LS unit. With a LS and 4x4 you really have 3 wheels working for you rather than 2 with a open rear.

I guess the lower the gear, it is better for low end torque such as off roading and towing. The higher gear is better for overall MPG and highway driving. I am not 100% sure...

all ford trucks have a LS option no matter what the trim. the 3.73 is the better of the 2.

It does . Must be a problem with your browser. The 3.73s are the far superior gears for these trucks. The 3.55s are just too steep for the weight (Frankly, I think the 3.73s are too, but thats a different story).

So its not an option? Every truck has one? When my insurance co gave me a rental when my truck was recovered from theft and was in the body shop, i was given a dodge hemi. the thing was so powerful, but wasnt "posi"...A truck that expensive didnt have LS and its hard to think that Ford actually put LS in all the trim levels as a Standard option....

No, per your quote, it is an OPTION on all trim levels. It is not standard.

I agree wheel I've acuttaly been a little disappointed with the my 04 screw with the 373 rear end

guess it's not as strong feeling off of the line because the 18 in tire size raises the final ratio (i think that is right )
I couldn't imagine having this truck with less than 373's the 355's must feel REALLY sluggish coming off of the line (stock that is)
