Registering a 78 F150 SC in California
Well I know in California if your vehicle is a 1975 or older you don't have to smog it.. I just bought a 1978 F150 SuperCab.. I was told it does not have any smog equipment on it.. (being it's an out of state truck) I crawled under it and sure enough there are no cats.. I haven't lifted the hood yet. (I just got it yesterday)
I'm trying to find out if anyone knows of any way I can do to get this thing registered.. I have a feeling I'll have to buy all the smog parts, but if there are any loopholes that I don't know about let me know..
I know someone is going to say I should post this in a regional forum, but the traffic through there is pretty minimal.. I figured I'd put it here and see if anyone has done this before..

you probably wont need cats, however you will need the basics, EGR, PCV, ported vacuum switches, a million feet of vacuum lines, 2 barrel carb(assuming 351M/400) air pump with assorted check valves. Goto the local library and find the mitchel emissions diagram book and find the year/motor/federal emissions for your year and build your truck off of that.

Well I spoke with the Technical Advisors of the Consumer Affairs in California..who are above the BAR.. >Bureau of Automotive Repair< (They are the last word for stuff like this)
He said California will not make me install anything that didn't come on the vehicle from the factory.. Since it's a 49 state vehicle and not a Ca vehicle. So basically I just need an EGR, TAC and various little things, but I do not have to have cats.. YAY!
So I just have to make sure it meats the Federal EPA standards (49 state) and not the CA emissions.. Sweet..
The various items I need are prolly. from the sheet you posted Beavis.. He said he's going to get everything he can together and fax it to me..It's prolly the same thing you posted.
Mil, I'll try and look tonight.. I just got the truck yesterday and haven't popped the hood.. <been busy>

Quote: He said California will not make me install anything that didn't come on the vehicle from the factory..
Who said this part ?
Since it's a 49 state vehicle and not a Ca vehicle.

Sorry I'm, skeptical.
I don't interpret what he said as what you assume.
These people have special wording to confuse people.
I take what he said is that: They won't make you install anything on that truck that wasn't on it built as a California Truck..... not a 49 state truck.
Meaning, The 78 California trucks had Cats.

they cant make you put calif emissions on a federal vehicle. That would be tampering, it has to come with what it had from the factory. Ive been through this several times, if its federal, it has to comply with the federal emissions. It cant be sold brand new in california, but once its sold, its kosher here.
So, if it came with the factory with no cats an 8-71 blower a pair of 1150 CFM dominators, and federal emissions certification then its OK in cali.
[edit] As my chart shows, some years did not require cats in '78 (the higher GVW's. In '79 I believe everything had to have cats. Look for OC in the listings. What motor and GWVR (found on door tag) do you have?
