It might be neat for a tow rig.

It should give you better fuel mileage where it would be like running an overdrive

Yeah but it's not going to be a gear splitter like a under/over drive. I'm not sure what the high and low range ratios are in the axle your thinking about, but chances are its going to be lower than what you would want for highway speed.

Are you going to be cool with extreme extra weight and carrying two different spares, for the two different front and rear wheel bolt patterns? I have a 89, F-700 I had to pull the six spoke hubs and brake drums off one day. I had to use an engine hoist!

On a different occasion I had to pull and reinstall the transmission, once again the engine hoist paid for itself. (The floor pan is removable for trannie access). My point is F-,B-,C-600 thru 8000 series stuff is really heavy.

I believe the F500-700 axles were at least close to the 6:1 or 7:1 range...

Add to that it weighs about 1/2 of what your truck weighs... might not be very good for gas mileage.

Though on the flip side, you'll never break it with your "toy" truck

Other than the wieght factor, i think it would be a pretty cool swap to do. Depending on a ratio, you could easily pull quite a bit of wieght. We have a split axle on our 70 something grain truck it is nice. To shift it, theres just a little **** you pull out right on the shifter.

Theres usually an air valve on the shifter that shifts operates 2 speed motor. You go through the gears on the transission, then shift the 2 speed in to high range. When the gears are unloaded (clutch released) the axle will shift. Then go back through the gears again.

If your doing this with the stock transmission you might find out the gear ratios don't work well with a 2 speed axle.

Dave, you are thinking of a multi range trans. a two speed rear shift is electric operated, and is shifted 1 low, 1 high. 2 low 2 high. blah blah blah.
