Two intermittent dashboard issues

I have a 2000 F150, 5.4L. I have about 90k on it and am looking forward to next weekends task - taking Racerguys excellent description and pictures of the lower ball joints and replacing mine...

But that's not my question. I have been experiencing my odometer intermittently working for about 20,000 miles. It'll be on for days, and then it will be out for a trip to the store, a day, etc, and then it will come back on. That's problem #1.

Problem #2, which may or may not be related, is that my "Service Engine" light will intermittently come on. No rhyme or reason really. At first I thought it was related to my gas cap being ajar. I don't think so now. I also notice that some times when I fill up with gas, it'll go off.

Are these things related? Different problems? Thanks!

different problems...the 1st one is common and I think there is a thread w/ a fix in the Expy forum. Not sure about the 2nd one, go by Auto Zone or Advance and they will check any codes for free.

i had the same trouble with the dash odometer going out. saw the thread on this site. took the dash unit out one weekend, opended the circuit board and resolder a cold joint on the back, then reinstalled the dash. took about 2 hours i think. the post has photos and shows where to solder the pin. disassembly of the dash is not difficult, but not for a beginner. look for the thread and it has photos.

Welcome! Have fun with your ball joints! If you're so inclined to do that job, I dare say you can handle the dissappearing odo. Rob.

Thanks guys, this is great information. What a great site! I also own a 2003 Explorer so I couldn't find a better site. Hmmm, someday maybe I'll start asking questions about my Jubilee NAA tractor...I mean, it is a FORD after all!!!!
