Such a thing as too loud?

I have a 1973 F250 4x4 with a 360. I want to run 3" dual exhaust straight out the back. Will I be able to hear the radio with this setup. I do like it really loud though so if I have to turn it up loud thats fine I just want to make sure I will hear it at all while still having an extremely loud exhaust.

A 3 inch dual exhaust is pretty big for that engine isn't it? I would think a single 3 inch would work. What are your engine mods?

Having rear exit is a step in the right direction. I had true, dual 2.5" side-exit on my 351W, straight pipes with headers. Did it myself from the auto parts bin. Yes, there is "too loud" in a daily driver but not in a "blow the doors off the competition on the weekends" driver. My advice is to sound deaden the cab and buy an amp for your stereo, also a spray in bedliner might help too. I ended up installing flowmasters because it was just too loud and driving around with earplugs in, although manly, is rather unattractive to the ladies.

For the best of both worlds I would suggest installing some cut-outs in front of your mufflers of choice (I like the way Flows sound... if you don't want to spend that much, long glasspacks or maybe some trubo mufflers will work. I agree that dual 3" is way too big for that engine... dual 2.25" or maybe even 2.5" will suffice.

I had straights on my 6.9 diesel with 24" long echo tips. I pissed alot people off that i wanted to and alot of people that i did not need to. It was a young phase now i know that bigger exhaust can rob power from my truck. Plus the louder you are the more attention you bring to yourself by the cops. A good sound i like is 40 series flowmasters plus 18"echo tips this is a good combination. Plus it takes a good motor to make exhaust sound to!

Thanks guys that opinion helps me a lot. Yes I meant no cat no mufflers, and the only real change I've made is longtube headers. I like the glasspack idea though and may be doing that as well.

I would suggest you post up in the 360/390 forum about running a dual 3" exhaust. You might hurt your performance with that setup, especially if the engine is fairly stock. You don't want a loud truck that lacks power, I don't anyways.

I have a 67 mustang with a 351 and long tube headers, an X-pipe and flowmaster 2 chambers, exiting at the rear. I eventually replaced the flows with straight pipe because the car was too quiet. It was still to quiet after that because of the rear exit. I then elbowed the pipes in front of the rear wheels. Now it's really loud. I can still hear my stereo, but am thinking of putting some mufflers back on with the side exhaust.

Run dual 2.5" pipes and Purple hornies glasspacks. With long tube headers you can run the Purple Hornies header mounts and go with 3" right off them, as well but 2.5" would be fine on your engine I would think.
