Multi Function Switch

I was having problems with brake lights not working, blinkers working with key off and flasher relay going continually (had to unplug it when not using the truck). I removed the multi-function switch, took it apart and washed the inside connections with a electrical connection cleaner. When I reinstalled it all problems were gone and things functioned as they should. It was a simple and inexpensive fix that took little time. This could be a simple fix for many of the problems associated with these systems. Just be careful when disassembling the switch so you do not loose any springs. I did and now have to pull my flasher switch up by hand for it to function.

The multi-switch is located at the end of the turn signal lever in the steering column. The multi-switch and the lever are all one unit.

Yup, had almost the same exact problems with my sister's '96 t-bird (was my car )

Hazards would flash only one side, directionals didn't work, brakes didn't work, etc. etc.

Took it apart, cleaned it up a little, and put it back together. I also had the wipers stop working a few years after I bought it brand new, broken wire inside.

For my sister (20 years older than me), I ordered a brand new switch from an auto-parts store she sells marine parts to. $60 or so, jobber. Listed around $110.

In my case, I wouldn't bother fixing it. I only opened it up to verify it was the problem. I don't need to have no brake lights during a panic stop, or no directionals, etc.

However, they are repairable if you are so inclined

Well the problem I am having is that when I have my wipers runnin for an extended period of time, I can smell a burning smell from the dash vents. Nothing is in heir and it only does it with the wipers ON....just wondering what that could be. Does it sound like the switch or something else?
