There is a clip where the cable enters the speedometer behind the dash. You can reach it without puling the instrument cluster if you have small hands. Press the clip in while pulling back on the cable housing and it will release. You and then pull the cable out of the housing. Wipe it clean, then use Lubripate white grease to grease it (a thin coat all over). Slide the cable back in the housing, slide the housing back onto the speedometer (retaining clip will engage automatically), and you have a quiet, steady speedometer.

Many times by the time it starts jumping around the cable is shot and needs to be replaced.

My speedo gas been on the fritz for years. I did take it out once and lube it as well as make sure there was nothing to make it bind. Put it all back together and it lasted about six months before it went back to the same ol'. I know it needs a new cable...just haven't done it.

My speedo wouldn't even register until I got up to about 20 mph and then it would be very unsteady. Saturday I pulled the entire cable assembly from the inst cluster to the trans out and dissambled everything. Mine is a two-piece with a sensor with two wires on it(I think it's for the cruise control). Cleaned everything and lubed with Hillco Lube. Works like brand new now!
