Question Need help understanding linkage on 86 ford f250

I have an 86 ford f250 with an automatic tranny and an edlebrock carburetor. I need help understanding how to adjust the linkage on it. The truck currently won't shift out of second gear. I have to manuelly shift it from first, second, and once in drive it just stays in second gear. I believe the linkage needs to be adjusted. The kick down may need adjusting also. Please help me understand how the linkage works. thanks.

I don't know what transmission you have as you didn't mention, but if you have a C4 or C6 your transmission shifts into 3rd gear based on manifold vacuum. There should be a vacuum line coming off your transmission. Check that it is not leaking anywhere and is connected to manifold vacuum. If that checks out you most likely have a bad vacuum modulator (part on side fo transmission that vacuum line goes to). It is what "tells" the transmission to shift to 3rd gear. The diaphragm may have gone bad or it may be stuck internally, so you could try replacing that. If that still doesn't fix it then your problem is most likely internal to teh transmission.

Of course if you do not have a C4 or C6 this may not apply.

Cadunkle - Thank you so much! You were right. The vacuum line wasn't even connected. I also realized that the kick down rod was too short. I got an extension for it and connected that vacuum line and the truck shifts better than it ever did. Thanks again...smile.
