motor noise
hi all i have a 1967 240 inline six i rebuilt had the rods turned got a reground crank new lifters cam rings bearings ect, the problem is it runs great now but i hear a noise from the motor can't pin point it is it possible that the lifters would make this noise reason i ask is they seem loose fit not that you can see but they come out easy, are they suposeto be that way, also wen i push in on the clutch i hear noise and it changes sounds like a nocking but not a rod nocking

I had a 240 for many years. If it is a tick you may want to check your exhaust manifold. After I rebuilt mine, one of the bolts on the manifold loosened after a while and I had an exhaust between my Head and exhaust manifold. You may also want to take a plug wire off each cylinder and see if the noise goes away (if you can hear it when it is parked and running). Just a few ideas. The key is though, is it a knock or a tick?

312 is correct about the pistons. Before I rebuilt mine I had so much play in my block that at idle the pistons would slap back & forth making a noise. Did you measure the taper of your cylinders in your block or was there a big ridge when you pulled it appart? If you had a machine shop check your block out they should have caught this.
After I rebuilt my 240 I had a noise and it ended up being the little tin oil slinger was cracked and was spinning around on the front of the crank. Drove me nuts until I pulled the front cover off and found it.

all i had the machine shop do is resize the rods they were out of round, and the reground crank. it's my sisters truck she let one of her freinds son's rebuild it he put all the rod caps on the wrong rods it sounded like all the rods were nocking at that time and no oil pressure then luckly the only drove it for 5 or 6 miles then, now the oil pressure is all the way over on high, lucky enough the main caps were put on the right ones, i think it's bored 0.40 but that was before she got the truck, has new bearings rings lifters cam gaskets oil pump new flywheel carb holley one bbl oil sending unit fuel pump all this is new not used, she should have left it alone but her freind talked her into letting her son rebuild it. it ran nice before with no problems, this was that kids first motor overhaul big mistake and my sister knows this now, i told my sister to drive it. it don't get hot and has great oil pressure and runs good,

i can ajust the rockers, but i took a long peice of wood dowl long pole, put it to my ear. the noise sounds like it is down by the pan toward the front but not sure, it sounds deeper in the front for some reason, i think it is piston slap, i have a 88 ford f150 5.0 and it has bad piston slap good oil pressure,i went to this other forum on the 88 and someone there said that ford made the pistons smaller than the bore if i remember the site i will post it. i will check the push rods thank you
