96 Toyota 4runner vs 84 Ford F150 4x4

Some guy at work today was bragging up his Toyota 4runner, saying how it pulled soo good and nothing in the parking lot could touch it. It's bone stock with the 3.4 DOHC V6, automatic, 4wd, 265/75 all season tires and an electric locking rear diff. He seems to think it will drag my 84 F150 4wd like a sled...mmmmk what ever! I have a mildly built 300 six (bored, cammed, ignition, exhaust, carb, all the goodies) NP435 speed grannybox, heavy duty 11" clutch, 4.10 gears, locker in the rear, limited slip in the front, 33 inch mudders, and it weighs around 4800-5000 pounds. Yotas are pretty good trucks but that 4runner does not stand a chance against the "Pillar of Power" 300 Ford six! I know I would drag that Yota like I wouldn't even feel it back there. It's not even a good match up...more like a massacre for the Toyota. What do yall think of this one!? Haa! Damn city slickers anyway, jus don't know any better!

My dad has a 92 4 Runner 5 speed that has a 3.0 (i believe). I dont know the comparison between this and the 3.4l, but I can tell you we had a small pop-up camper a few years ago and all I can say is what a gutless vehicle...not to mention the rear end about dragged on the ground with 50lbs of junk in the back. not to get off the subject about pulling (which IMHO he doesnt stand a chance) but the 4 runner without anything behind it is a very nice riding vehicle. I do like the way it rides/steers...but dont try to win any races or pulls with it!

Hmm... offer to challenge him with some high-strength tow-cable attached to each trailer ball.

I love old Toyotas (used to have one) but nothing short of some JDM OTR tractor stands a chance against a NP435 1st gear in 4-Lo (had one of those too)....

They all do that... 2nd gen 4-Runners are known for their weak rear springs and sagging rear ends. It was Toyota's quick-fix to make the HiLux truck chassis get somewhat close to a car-like ride.

Yeah as many would have guessed, he wussed out! That's okay with gas prices as high as they are, it wouldn't be worth the gas used to do it...it would be fun though!

Your truck with all the goodies will drag the toyota all over the parking lot. Just rev and don't stall your engine with the manual transmission, it sometimes might happen especially on dry pavement.

She does pull really good (low gears, lotsa torque, and traction), a buddy of mine was out mud boggin in his Jeep Grand Cherokee and he blew his right rear tire out and it came off the the rim. His 4wd was no working at the time so I had to pretty much dead weight drag him out of that mud hole and through 4 more all the way back to his farm. When I got him back up to the gravel road I guess he was holding his brakes trying to slow me down...well I didn't even feel it back there. I went back there the next day and there were some deep ruts dug out in the road from him having his tires locked up being dragged. Heh heh pretty funny!!

The Toy 3.4L is okay, and much better than the 3.slow predecessor to it, but it is not anywhere near what the 4.0L v6 or and won't outpull the I6.

Boy, how bloated most SUVs are these days. Now something like the early 4Runners with the detachable roof and a 4.7L v8 would be something to look at.

Pkupman...I need some picture!!!! Your truck sounds incredible...I love the '82-'86 (non black grille) Ford trucks. Those trucks are so tough. I love the 300 I6 as well, there's no way he'd get you.

Yeah I might have to pack a lunch for that guy, it might be little more work for the ol girl. Nothin 1000 lbs of weight in the bed couldn't fix. Yeah I have been wanting to post some pictures of my trucks on FTE since I joined...just haven't figured out how to do it yet. I did hook bumpers with a buddy of mine who has an 80s fullsize Chevy truck with a built 350 and 38" swampers once I didn't beat him but he didn't pull me backwards either! Good ol "Pillar of Power" 300 six!!
