239 Flat Head with an Automatic Tranny

I was hoping that some one would know if a automatic transmission from a 1969 Ford F100 would bolt onto the 239 Flathead engine in my 49 truck. My dad has a 1969 for parts that the transmission is great, and I would like an automatic. Let me know

There is almost no chance of that working - but I am no expert. I do know an expert will need to know what engine the trans was mounted to.

Welcome to FTE.

I don't know if you can bolt the automatic transmission to the back of your flattie but I would grab the rear axle out of the truck if it is a 1/2 ton and install it in your '49. It's pretty much a bolt in, there is a little bit of work involved but no where as much work as mating an auto tranny to the flattie. With the modern rear axle you should be able to get better highway speed out of it.

If the trans is a C-4 (not real likely) it is a popular flathead conversion. I believe Speedway sells the adapters, among others. No overdrive but properly done it works fine. If it's a C-6 or FMX trans, I think you should look elsewhere.

Like bobj said, don't let the 9" rear end in that 69 go without a fight. If you don't want to use it, there are plenty of us that would. You may be able to find an adapter for the tranny and folks ahve already given you a couple of good places to check.

Please let us know what find out. I am doing my first of these trucks right now but will be doing at least two more and probably three before I am finished. I do want to put an automatic in one of them so I am particularly interested in knowing what you decide to do.

I don't know if they ever put a Ford-O behind a flathead, but if they ever did, you'd have a chance of putting an FMX in its place.

Well there 2 types of mind sets on this.. One it cant be done... two anything can be done with time and money.. And from what I have read and seen in the past.. a flattie will not mount to a ford-O or a FMX with out mods.. Ok so we are at the mods part.. I know there a couple of places that make adapters for this job.. And most likly id ask around here to see who may have done this mod in the past.. But If I was U.. And spending the money for the mods Id also opt for the C-6 or newer Auto tranny..

They did put a Ford-O-matic behind a flathead V8 ... I think 1951 was the first year for the Ford-O in cars.

That would be a good start. The Ford-O to FMX might be possible by using the Ford-O torque converter and installing the Ford-O front pump into the FMX case. But I haven't done this myself.

A C-6 behind a flathead is like using a chainsaw to cut butter. A lot of strength and weight that just isn't needed. Its size is likely to create a lot of work to squeeze it in. Maybe you could trade the C-6 for a C-4, or sell it and use the money to buy one. There are several ways to adapt a C-4 to a flattie and some are cheap. Do a web search on it.

The truck brochure I have says that the Ford o Matic was a factory option in 1953, so it ought to bolt to a flathead

The ford-o-matic was available in 1951 for the ford cars. I know because my first car was a 1951 ford tudoor sedan with a flathead V8 and a auto trans (hated that trans wanted a stick). Purchased in 1957 for the hugh sum of $100.00 which was a very large amount of money to a 16 yr old kid.

So I from listening to everyone here, and a few other sources, I guess I am looking for a c-4 transmission. I'll trade anyone a c-6 if they are interested.

Thanks for the info everyone
