1955 F-100 Steering Box
I need a new steering box for my 1955 F-100, but my finances are a little on the constrained side to say the least. I would rather not pay the $450 one site was asking, so I went to eBay and found myself a great deal on a 1955 Studebaker steering box. I asked a friend who happens to be a mechanic if he though it would fit, and he told me to ask the people selling it. I asked and they had no idea. Can someone please tell me if the Studebaker box would fit and, if not, where I might possibly find a decent deal on one that does. Here's the website for the one from eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3ARTQ%3AUS%3A1 Thanks!

I really doubt the stude box will work, and why replace a 50 year old box with another 50 year old box? Do a search on steering boxes here or look at the topics from the last few days, there were at least 3 threads going about this same topic. The most sucessful swap with the beam axle is to use one off an 80-84 Toyota 4x4 pickup. If you use a power steering box, all the parts to do the conversion except the PS pump to fit your engine is available from Mid Fifty for 289.00 and is a bolt in swap. If you decide to use a manual box, you'll need to construct or have constructed a conversion Pitman arm since the sector shaft splines are different between the two boxes and no one that I know is building them for the manual box. The Toy boxes are available used for ~ 100.00 or less out of the salvage yards. Try www.car-part.com if you can't find one locally.

Ryan, a belated welcome to the forum. When you get a few minutes, read the sticky threads at the top of the forum and set up your gallery. We love to see pictures of these old trucks.
It is possible to rebuild your steering gearbox yourself if you are interested. As I recall, the parts to do it run about $200 and are available through a couple of vendors. Let me know if you want to go that route.
