Has anyone used one of the repair services offered on ebay to repair the overhead console? I tried to do it myself by following the instruction listed on FTE but it only lasts for a couple of days then it goes blank again.... I figure for $40 it's at least worth a try and much cheaper than purchasing a replacement.
Rich, I used this ebay guy FORD SUPERDUTY F250 F350 OVERHEAD CONSOLE COMPUTER RPR! | eBay to repair mine and a friends overhead console. It was worth the $34. Got it fixed and back in my mailbox in 3 days.
Both are still working fine. Not sure about the link you posted.
Can you just not get it soldered correctly Rich? Ask for help at radio shack or find a local ham operator. I bet they could get it soldered up for you.
Or maybe it's just getting to be time for some reading glasses?
Thanks Frank. I saw him on ebay also - out of FT Lauderdale. I posated the one in Minnesota since the location is much closer to me.
Chris - Both are true - especialy the glasses! Unfortunatley in my last repair attempt I busted one of the loose chips . So much for giving it that little extra squeeze ..... When I spoke with David (Seller on Ebay) he said no problem, he can fix it.
That's OK. When we did my wife's, we pulled it apart and then looked at each other and both said, I can't see that. We both had to get our glasses. It took both of us and a flash light to get those little things soldered back in place.
Rich, this is kinda mute now, but did you try to re-solder the rectangular resistor or the ones you can get from radio shack? I tried to re-install the original ones, that was a no go it was much easier to do the RS ones. Either way your going to be money ahead.
As Jason said, kind of a mute point now but this was literally my first FTE repair I did and why I signed up and support the board, there is a great post about doing the repair yourself (directed more towards others that read this) and it isn't difficult to do. I took mine down and did it again, as there was more then one resister not fully connected and used a prototype pen. That was much easier and quicker, I might yank it off the ceiling again and redo the not so great soldering job I did the first time with the prototype pen.
I'll have to try this on my F-250, the overhead console is starting to dim on this one as well lately. I figured I would send out the one on the Excursion first (since I broke one of the rectangular resistors) and see how it goes. I'll have to try you recommendation next time around on the Superduty - thanks!
Do you guys happen to recall which resistor at Radio Shack to use?
Chris, I know what you mean ! When I got mine back I could tell that they had resoldered every connection on the board. It looked like they did it with a machine in a jig of some sort. Looked like a brand new board. I figured I'd wreck it and end up spending more money. I'm happy with it and hope it works for a long time.

Rich, 680 standard style that's all I could find when I looked back at some threads.
When I bought my truck it was dead already, I sent it out to the guy in FLA and a few days I got it back and its mint! My only question, my pals v10 has the MPG option and mine does not.. Did the PSD have that option?
My 2003 F-250 and 2000 Excursion both with display MPG. Not sure if it matters but what year is your truck? I don't pay too much attention to it because it is nover very accurate at all - guess why they call it the lie-O-meter.......
